Pump prices are certainly heading north, but adjusted for inflation and other factors, is fuel cheaper, similarly priced or more expensive than in the past?

I first bought petrol in 1984.
At the time I think petrol was about 35p per litre.
I remember that filling up my Mini 1000 cost about a fiver.

When I got my first job I used to pay 47.5 per litre at Keith's Garage in Aylesbury

How I miss those days. £10 would get me nearly half a tank in the Capri
yup, my 2.0s would fill for 20 odd quid.

Sorry guys - I found a little notebook I used at one time when I was a student, and in the back, I found a record of petrol use a liitle bit later, probably late 70's early 80s - and it was 32.5p per gallon (yes GALLON!).
You're either lying about your age or you weren't in England. Petrol was 33-35p per gallon when I passed my test in May 1973, in the summer or Autumn of that year there was a war in the middle east and we nearly ended up with petrol rationing, I still have the ration books that were issued, when supplies started flowing again it went up to about 50p per gallon by the end of the year and it never went down again.

1.18ppl may of last year cheapest ive seen it since driving was 1.12ppl which was in july/august of last year. At least for me it has only gone up 20ppl so have'nt noticed a hugh difference in filling up it cost me i think around a fiver extra to fill my tank which is hardly breaking the bank. I bet it harder for people who have been driving for a while when petrol was half as much as now.

I took a photo of my first car the day I traded it in, it would have been 1994 I think, 54.9p a litre for petrol, 50.9p for diesel, it would have been less when I first bought it I guess.

Less than 50p/gallon, as I remember putting 12p in, it was all I had before the end of the month on the dole at £10.30/week, fiver to mum for B&B and £5 for the bikes HP. 30p/week on petrol......those were the days.

73p/litre I think. That was in 1999. I remember being in shock at the first time it cost me over £20 to fill the tank.

Low 70s a litre I think for basic unleaded? So about half the cost I now pay for 98 RON. The depressing thing is we're only talking ten years ago.

I remember having this conversation when I went with my Dad to fill up my first car in 1997 and it had just gone over the 60p a litre mark, and he said it remembers it as 60p a gallon when he filled his first car in 1975.
