Hi guys im new to the forums. I'm looking for some advice on the Corolla Tsport.

I already own a Gen 6 Celica GT but looking to upgrade to something alittle bit newer with slightly better performance than i already have.

Trying to book test drives at the moment to get an experience of LIFT and see if its the right car for me.

What should i look out for and is there a better alternative out their for roughly the same cash (4000)

Thanks

Kenny

I had one for 3 years, and apart from the extra light steering and ordinary handling it's okay. Mine had the TTE/Eibach springs fitted and even then I thought a 1.4 TDCI mk6 Fiesta handles better. Spent nothing apart from normal servicing and tyres etc, very reliable.
I used to average 33mpg.

For £4k I'll be looking at Celica T sport or Civic Type R.

I've had one too.

Performance is good when 'on cam' and the engine makes a great sound.

Handling isn't up to much. There's plenty of grip it's just a bit roly poly and doesn't turn in too sharply.

Mine was also reliable.

One of the worst things about it is the noise on the motorway. 6th is very low geared so 70 mph is about 3500 rpm. Unfortunately something in the exhaust or similar resonates at around this speed so it's a bit 'boomy' between about 70 and 85. Above that it actually quietens down!

This must qualify as Toyotas worst ever attempt at a sporty car - they fail totally in any sporting quality.

I took one in p/x against a Golf Gti T and thought it might be like a Civic Type R.

Wrong.

Soggy handling with soft suspension which accentuates the overly high body height/body roll.
Overly light steering - think nissan bluebird levels of steering feel.
Absurd gear ratios - 5th to 6th is the same as going 5th to 5th - what were they thinking of when the chose the gear ratios? even my girlfriend noticed how bad it was.
Complete lack of character - this model had a personality labotamy before leaving japan!
Didnt feel fast - peaky engine but lacking in any soul.
Good job it wasnt fast those cheap front seats wouldnt hold you in place if you went flying round a roundabout.
Comedy sat nav - imagine reading the sat nav via an LCD digital watch display - thats it.

Maybe with some time and upgrades it could be made ok but not worth the effort.

Bizarely I later had the same model 1.6 corrola and I thought it was great - ie as a comfy econmical bland reliable family box with a decent bit of go. But the sporty one is just a complete waste of time.

Handling - Yep, not great. Although the trade off is a decent ride quality I suppose.

I never thought the steering was bad at all. In fact it was very light for parking but weighted up nicely once at 20mph+.

Gear ratios - Yep, stupid.

Lack of character - Dunno, I quite liked the sleeper aspect of it.

I thought it felt fast when in "lift", and others did too. It would certainly keep pace with other "fast ish" cars (ST220 Mondeos, Audi TTs etc). Peaky engine lacking in any soul?? Peaky yes, but lacking in soul?? How do you define soul in an engine? I think the engine is a cracker - Ever tried it in an Elise?

Seats - Never had any issues. Mine were leather, maybe they're more bolstered?

Sat nav - No idea, didn't have it. Fairly sure there is a full colour screen version though.

This^^^^^^

I have one and its not a bad car as i have said on here before it was perfectly capable of keeping up with an elise and focus rs till the rs cooked its brakes. As others have said seats are not supportive and 5-6th is just stupid and pointless and its noisy at 70-85mph. Also likes a drink.
Get it going and look at the fuel consumption guage and i have seen it drop to 5mpg.

To make proper progress you really have to keep it on lift.

If you can i would advise the kompressor version.

To sum it up for me:
Great engine + noise on lift, really squashy handling.

As mentioned before, if you can get a decent Celica 190 instead, i'd do that.

They sound like a great road car. They need little in the way of maintanence, good sized boot and not an offensive design.

I don't quite get all the Schumachers of the World complaining about soft suspension set-ups. A stiff set-up only makes sense when pressing on (which is probably a grand total of 2% of driving) billiard table smooth tarmac & on the track. For anything else, it's totally jarring.

Maybe i'm getting older, or have completly lost interest in day-to-day cars, but I'd personally welcome a softer sprung car with the state of the roads today.

V.poor handling, wobbly.

Most obvious alternative is a type-r. But i would get a clio 197 over both of them. Fantastic in the twisties where it matters, keeping the car above 5k RPM.

All of them are st on the m-way so keep that in mind.

Apparently they start using oil at high mileages, can be up to 1 litre per 1000 miles. So not terrible but a lot of people don't check their oil levels very often.

I'd go for the supercharged version too, was it available as a 5-door for the ultimate sleeper effect?

True but when you do go out on that sunday afternoon you will be massively disappointed driving the corolla.

It's the 2% of driving that you wait all week for. Its that 2% that makes you buy the right car. That 2% makes us all petrol heads.

Rubbish!

If the intention is hooning about, then buy something with that in mind- like a Kit Car of some sorts. A do it all car/bike/whatever just doesn't exist- they're all compromised in one way or the other, just in different directions. smile

The thing with lift is it cuts in a 6k rpm and if you want to use it around the streets you will be doing 40-80mph, I only use lift when entering slip roads to join a quiet motorway.

It was up to 2002. do a bit of research on the net.
Toyota unofficially covered cars up to 7 years and 100000 miles. Mine suffered from excessive oil usage, the T sport is NOT affected.
