Whats the nicest car you have ever driven?

I had a BMW 320 auto with the M-Sport bits and bobs on it as a courtasy car. Had it for a month and loved it, saving for my own one now.
This is precisely why I believe manufacturers should give out decent courtesy cars. Caterham's R300 courtesy car really impressed me, and I nearly bought an R300 because of it. Lotus' courtesy car however is a Ford Fiesta, and has got me no closer to buying an Evora or an Exige....I've been fortunate enough to have owned & driven some very nice cars over the years, but nothing compares to trundling about the countryside in my S3 Landy with the roof off, door tops off & screen folded flat during the summer months. It takes me back to a much more innocent time & I am more than happy to potter about at 45mph without getting myself all uptight about overtaking the next & the next & the next.......

Depends where you get your entertainment I guess. A 320i is identical to drive to a 330i in every single way other than the peak acceleration, power/torque available and sound. The ride and handling and all the intricate aspects of these are the same. So, if you're more into corners than straights, and rarely floor it, or perhaps do a lot of steady 70 cruising on the motorway, then you're going to have a very similar owning experience with both cars. Admittedly though, the mpg drop off in the 3 litre compared to the 2 litre appears to be so slight it's perhaps not really worth going for the 320i over the 330i to save money.I drove the 288GTO & the F40 over long distances & i can honestly say that i couldnt fault either of them.
The 288 was just sublime & drove like a dream - the F40? Just an awesome car & would find it hard to believe that any owner, or ex-owner, would ever admit to being disappointed with it.
In my view it the daddy of all supercar's & possibly the greatest supercar of all although i havent got behind the wheel of a recent Lamborghini etc so maybe my view would change. Anyone want to give me the chance to compare what i view is the best ever?
An orange LP670/4 SV would be the obvious choice (not that i am being greedy you understand).
I know a couple of F40 owners & both have said that it is the one car that they would never, ever sell.
One also said that his wife would go before the F40.....

You missed the auto bit. The cornering was different as well - less able to steer on throttle - maybe due to less torque. I hate to say it, but as the 320i is no longer a six, I would go for the derv (in manual)NoelWatson said:

Sorry, yes, you're quite right, the auto would ruin it for me. As you say, a manual diesel would be a good buy if you are bhp agnostic. I've actually gone for the diseasal version as my practical car - a 320d. My favourite two cars of the current E90/E92 range are the M3 (which is fantastically complete as an everyday car) and then diesel on base spec wheels and tyres (that's the important bit!).
Good thread
There was one drive in a 1972 Elan Plus 2 (with the big valve engine) which will always stay with me. The way it gently drifted on those skinny tyres, the feel through the skinny rimmed steering wheel and the snick-snack of the perfectly placed gearlever was a revelation to me.
I will definitely have another old Elan again someday.
