Fastest car under £30000?
Discussion
I have just been browsing the classic ford section on PH lusting after a mk1/2 escort when i spotted this!

0-100 in 5 seconds!!! All for £30k. Is there anything that can accelerate quicker for less money?

I think an unmolested GT-R33 in Midnight Purple looks lovely, but you're quite right, that is nasty.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2616364.htm

If you put decent tyres on it, I don't think five seconds to 100mph would be unattainable in that beast. Even at that level of power, these things launch like nobody's business. Plus you have enough change for something with a clutch not set in concrete for city driving

Feel free to shoot me in the face PH / Internet stylee and all but isn't that car going to be absolutely hideous to drive unless you're in the mood for sprinting from traffic light to traffic light? Surely to get anything like the quoted figure on road tyres it's got to be geared down for maximum acceleration and will drive horribly on even slightly open roads. Don't get me wrong but I think there's a balance point for acceleration versus driveability and this misses it by a country mile. My point is, wouldn't you rather have a sorted car for £30K that you could drive whenever you wanted?http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2626910.htm

Nice choice, depends on if you like a fast drive or a drag-racer. The M3 CSL is probably the fastest car for under £30k, just not at acceleration :>
I'd hazard a wild guess that the 0-100 time of 5 seconds was done on slicks, in which case the jury's out - a Formula Renault with only 400bhp per tonne can do 0-100 in 4.9; that's how important grip is. I'd be willing to bet that in fully road legal spec, a Caterham R500 (available for well under £30k) would pull the trousers down of that Escort very comprehensibly.
Something like this I would think http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2617530.htm
Slightly over budget but you have to haggle a bit
