Ok the guy's being a bit cheeky claiming that the mileage may or may not be 16k, but there's nothing wrong with buying a scruffy but mechanically sound car, doing some repairs on it then selling on for a profit.
It's something i'd like to do myself if I had the time and space.
"cheeky"?! I call it being bare faced liar.

Common sense ( lacking in many I admit) should tell you this is wrong-un. It's a V-plate so 12 years old yet only done 16k. That's only about 1300 miles a year over its entire life. Even my mom who must be the lowest mileage driver I know still does about 3k a year.
This is fair comment, and was my initial reason for refusing to come along to view it. If it smells dodgy, walk away.
It was the eBay audit trail which amused me biggrin

If you want to check the mileage, just ask the guy for the document number off the V5 and run it through the online MOT checker and the history of this car will be laid bare.

As for the OP being incredulous about the 16k - its an 12 year old banger for heavens sake. It's cost someone £400, which if they get a years motoring out of it is pretty good value, regardless of 16k or 116k!

Give over, it's a crappy old Ka. Why get so indignant about it? It's not like you've just spotted a clocked 2 year old BMW 330d with a £10k price tag and smelt a rat.

It's a £400 12 year old Ford Ka.

fk me some of you are missing the point.

Whether it's a ka or a lamborghini, this seller is dis-honest and is trying to con people in the hope that a potential 16,000 ka will fetch more than a 116,000.

And is trying to cover himself by stating he is not sure whether the mileage is genuine or not.

I'm shocked that some of you think it's ok because the car is st, where do we draw the line then? A 3 grand ka is st too so is it ok to lie about the mileage?

Because someone, somewhere, will be deceived into thinking this is something it isn't. £400 may not be much to you, but to some its a fortune.

No apparently on "low" sums of money it's ok to lie.

To be honest though that seller has made the car look better and could probably have made a little profit by being honest.

He's not lieing about it though: "16k, not sure if genuine" is very different to "this car has done 16k".

He may not be telling the full story, but I wouldn't say he's lieing.

Not lieing?! He knows the car has 116,000 miles on the clock as he bought it with 116,000 miles on the clock.

He's just a chancer trying to make the most of the fact the clock shows 16,000.

It's a play on words, and people like that are exactly why I won't use ebay to buy anything.

So he has memory loss? He purchased it a little earlier where that seller stated 116K. Honestly this place sometimes.

obviously he's a little 'backwards' as the mileage will be on any mots/history etc. Maybe the seller can't read?

Simplest way is to ask for the current MOT cert number and check it on the directgov website. Lists the mileage on lots of prior MOTs

Still, for £100 would make someone a handy little town car.

£350 starting bid is.............optimistic for a 116k Ka regardless of how newly sprayed the bumpers are!

He is lying because he is fully aware that it has 116,000 but in the mileage section, states 16,000. Whether or not he backs that up later with "not sure" - it's bks.

Buyer beware. All the tools for the history of this car are online, and the important ones are free.

There is no excuse any more to being hoodwinked into buying this. You can do online checks, you can get RAC/AA inspections, and for free you can pull it's MOT history which will show it's mileage for the last few inspections.

And all because the car has a 5 digit mileometer? Stone the crows, Miss Marple has nothing on you guys wink

The mots have probably been "mis-placed" and chances are that seller will end up selling to someone that doesn't know any better and won't even know about checking previous mots online.

The thing is there are "stupid" people out there, and they are the ones that get "done".

While everyone on this site is superior to everyone in the real world, and know everything about everything, not everyone does.

I'm shocked that some people on here can see no wrong in what the seller is doing, and are even going as far to pretty much say that if someone does get "done" it's their own fault.

all you need is the current one, get the certificate number from it and look it up.

He can't 'misplace' the ones on the government website can he.

Of course he can't, and I didn't say he could, all I said was that some people wouldn't know about being able to check previous mots online believe it or not, there are people out there that don't know.

While most of us would know, there are plenty of people out there who don't.

I'd say most of us mot certificate or not, would tell a mile off that the car was not low mileage by simply viewing it in person.

The thing is people like the seller target people who don't know any better.

I never said that it would be their own fault if they got done. I just pointed out that it's a £400 12 year old banger. Nothing more, nothing less.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a 16k 12 year old Ford Ka in the first place. The engine has probably never got to temperature in the last several years, the car has never had a proper run, the car has probably never been serviced in the last 7-8 years (why bother with the lack of mileage), the tyres are probably original and could do with being replaced.

Start using it as a proper daily and it'll be a nightmare from day 1 as it'll be as fragile as anything.

I know from what I do that low mileage bangers are some of the most unreliable vehicles out.

I know you didn't I'm just saying that from reading some of the replies it's not far off that.

Put it this way if someone started a thread saying they bought a ford ka and linked to both the adverts, there would be a lot of members who would post saying it was their own fault, and telling them what they would have done in their place.

I wouldn't look twice at that car either way, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the seller is purposely acting ignorant.

He/she knows full well what the mileage on the car is, and they know that a car with a potential 16,000 miles on the clock would go for more than one with 116,000.
