Hi guys,

I've have recently put my 350Z up for sale on Pistonheads and Autotrader and have been contacted by email by Austin White.

This is the email he sent me:

Hello,

Thanks for the reply,i am interested in the purchase of the vehicle and am buying it for my uncle, whom i promised a vehicle but i want it to be a surprise package so i wont let him know about it until it has been delivered to him,i would have come to your location for the viewing but presently i am posted to Japan as a rescue aid team with the English red cross,I would be responsible for the delivery of the vehicle to him ,i do have a pick up agent that will pickup the vehicle and deliver it to him after payment has been settled and i will be responsible for delivery and insurance expenses of the vehicle...Please i would like you to answer some few questions as below and get back to me with your paypal email so i can make the payment effectively if you don't have a paypal account just a click to get one and it is the the most secure means of receiving money securely online www.paypal.co.uk do get back to me as soon as possible so i can proceed with payment.....

Are you the first owner of the vehicle ???
Does the vehicle have any mechanical disabilities presently?
What is your reason for selling it?
I am offering you the asking price
Do get back to me with your PayPal email so i can make the payment.

Austin..

What do you think, as anyone else come across his name or email ?

My previous reply was that the car was still for sale.

Before I reply, It doesn't feel the norm when selling a car.

What are your thoughts ?

Yeah, if I were on a Red Cross mission in a country recently struck by one of the worst natural disaters in living memory, I reckon I'd be finding the time to sort a car for my uncle as well...

Seems perfectly plausible. Actually, he sounds like a bloody nice guy to me, what with all the charity work and good deeds for the family.

I'm still rubbing my chin at the mo.

I'm not going to give out any bank details or any thing silly. So far he only wants to load my paypal account.

What are your thoughts, should I reply to the email or not ?

I'm pretty sure he can withdraw the money paid into a paypal account by claiming he hadn't received the car, or something along those lines.
In any case, you have two options, contact The British Red Cross and tell them you've been contacted by someone (tell them his name and any other details you have) asking if he is with them in Japan (or just tell him you have and they said they'd never heard of him). Or just ignore him, as it looks like as big a scam as Scammy the Scammer, of Scam Road, Scan Town ever did.

Every time I see one of these type e-mails, I think to myself "why bother, surely no one goes through with them?".

And then I read a thread like this and begin to think perhaps some people actually do!

Oh and for any large amount of money NEVER use Paypal. Once they realise the transaction is dodgy they will just take the money straight out of your bank account, long after the buyer has vanished

Seriously though, how many people don't think to check or are *ahem* not as clued up as you *ahem* and spot that it is as scam?

Its the sort of thing you hear of pensioner getting shafted by.
