Sorry if this is a repost.

This is slightly scary! Bases insurance premiums on:

  • Braking and Acceleration
  • Cornering
  • Speed
  • Time of driving (e.g. day time, night time etc)

Im guessing it works on a g-meter of some kind. Swerve to avoid something; £50 on your premium please laugh

Saw this on the news a few weeks back. I thought it was a bit unfair unless they have different criteria for each model of car as I have to be pushing SWMBOs car very hard to make it half as quick as mine. Similarly for cornering. If I take a bend at 50mph in the off roader it may be pushing it a bit and quite silly, the impreza may well comfortably take it 10mph faster.

I'd pay the extra 11% they're offering to have some fking freedom behind the wheel.

This.

11% isn't nearly enough of a reduction to drive around with a bloody telltale box in the car!

I suspect that depends on what you're talking about 11% of. They aren't aiming it at us, they're aiming it at 17 year-olds with multi-thousand pound insurance premiums.

Seems like a sensible thing to offer to me. It's not as if it's compulsory.

I can't see how it'd ever really work for new drivers but I honestly wouldn't mind something like that in my daily hack. I honestly believe my hack driving standard would be adored by a black box.

they don't have to make it compulsory. they just have to load young drivers premiums to a level they can never achieve...

oh wait...

I think it's perfect for young drivers as it separates the sensible drivers from idiots. Teenagers pay high insurance because the insurer just doesn't know how high a risk they will be because of no info on them so they assume the worst. If you are a sensible driver you'll pay less. Conversely, idiots may drive more sensibly because they know they are being watched!

But even on my premium which is £2900 a year, its only going to save me just over 300 quid which isn't really worth it..

Indeed, it still could work out more expensive as there is still a premium usually to pay up front.

My 17 yo daughter has got a 1 ltr Yaris. I expect they'd be constantly checking their blackbox to make sure it's still plugged in, as the 'performance' of her little Toyota won't even register on their accelerometer.

I have to slam my brakes on to get my Mini to stop. And that's at not at very high speeds. I see faults with this.

what I don't get is why it will only save up to 11%??

surely if its just down to how you drive, then this should have the potential to take insurance right down to the levels of experienced older drivers?

Wasn't the last blackbox pilot scheme scrapped after the people using them ended up paying next to nothing as they only signed up because they barely used their cars.
