no need for it to be on the MID (Motor Insurance Database) or anything like that.
Post offices are computerised these days an MID and VOSA check is automatic before tax can be issued. If you've evert tried to tax a car with a mail order M.O.T or cover note from a canceled policy it will be flagged and the authorities informed automatically as well. Nearly all post offices have cctv as well so it's not worth trying.

Maybe, but a car does not need to be on the MID to tax it at the post office or elsewhere. As long as you have valid insurance and valid evidence of it they will tax it.

The temporary insurance / tax issue is an odd one. They always stated that they couldn't be used for tax because they did not accept self printed notes and the temp insurance people never issue a non-digital certificate. However, as these are now acceptable, if you turn up with proof a car is insured at the time you are taxing it I can't see why they can refuse it.

I've taxed a car with a printed out insurance certificate about half an hour after insuring it, this was around 8 months ago. Wasn't aware anything had changed, sorry for bad advice!

Nothing has changed. If you have a certificate printed at 11.59 which says insurance starts at 12.00 then you can walk into a post office and tax it at 12.00 + 1 millisecond.
