Does anyone know whether it has an ejector seat fitted?

No ejector seat; it was deemed to be safer for the driver/pilot to stay inside in the event of an accident.

yikes Why? So he could be recognized after the crash?

Thanks. It would be interesting to read through their decision process on that. I suppose, the likely speed at which the thing would pitch or yaw when it went wrong precludes a successful ejection.

Why not try? Surely a crash in that thing at 1,000 MPH is a certain death.

Yeh i guess it would hurt if you ejected into the ground as it flipped...

Received in an email from them this morning, may be of intrest to you all.

Just a very brief update to let you know that BLOODHOUND SSC will be featured in "Bang Goes The Theory" to be broadcast on BBC1 (England) at 7:30 this evening. More info on regional times and BBC iPlayer on their website www.bbc.co.uk/bang.

I think it was down to the time it would take to eject, and what would happen to the car in that time. In the time it would take to eject the car could have flipped/rolled several times.

The emphasis on the design is to ensure that that situation doesn't arise, as supposed to reacting if it does. I agree though, it may be of some comfort to the driver if it had one.

There is also the issue of getting Andy Green out fast enough to miss the air intake, which is directly behind and above the cockpit.

One other factor to consider is that he will be pretty much lying down in the cockpit to keep his body low, and therefore ejecting him whilst in that shape would be extremely difficult.

That makes sense. I suppose an ejection seat would screw up the dynamics of such a car as well. If one is going to go 1,000 MPH in a car, one should have abandoned ideas of safety long before. smile

I dunno. Andy Green has that immensely cool and calculated approach that pilots seem to have. He can probably tell you to the last inch how far bits of him will be spread across Hakskeen Pan if things go wrong and I suspect he'll be keeping a very careful eye on everything safety related.

yes He's a very cool customer. Watch this, at about 1:50 Thrust SSC steps sideways (IIRC due to some aerodynamic issue with the wheel alignment) and he just throttles back, recovers control and pushes them to the stops again. While keeping a calm commentary.

I feel slightly sorry for these guys;

http://www.landspeed.com/intro.html

Build an 800mph car to retake the record, well at least they might achieve that on American soil.
