I'm thinking a whoosh parrot might be needed...
It's a Cosworth formula 1 engine, that drives a fuel pump modified from the one used in the Blue Steel missile.

http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/car/rocket_propulsion...
Indeed, but I think ZeeTacoe's point was that the engine it's is not a fuel pump as it said in the picture. Hence asking if the pump was behind the engine or in a box.

Back on topic, it's a fantastic project. I've loved this kind of stuff since seeing the full size Thrust SSC model at the '95 motorshow aged 11. I tried to buy the scale wind tunnel model they had on show but was turned down... £50 seemed a fair offer to my child mind.

I'm afraid I think this is nothing to do with the land speed record. The land speed record, should always be reserved for a car with powered wheels.

The only record being broken here is the one for the lowest flying aircraft and balls of steel.

It isn't a car, its an aircraft with very very very small wings
It's not an aircraft, it doesn't fly.
I could be wrong but I think you find it flies just fine. In fact I think you might find it has a nose shape and small trim tabs. I would suggest that over 500mph they are the only thing keeping it on the ground, and probably the only reason the wheels turn after that speed is passed.
Really?

I think you might be wrong. I think they've put rather a lot of time, money, and effort into ensuring it doesn't fly. Otherwise it wouldn't be eligible for the last speed record, would it?

By your definition, are F1 cars aircraft too?
You are somewhat contradicting yourself. First it doesn't fly, then they are trying to stop it flying.

I think I'm being consistent. An F1 car is wheel powered and therefore fits the definition of a car.

If (as with the other poster) the definition of a car is that it has four wheels and a steering wheel, then you could just put some castors on a saturn five rocket and call it a car.

Alternatively you could say that when a jumbo jet lands it fulfills the definition of a car.

I applaud the bravey and technical skill of the bloodhound team and wish them every success, But IMHO I think this should be a seperate category.

Is that your definition of a car? Most seem to suggest a wheeled vehicle that carries it's own from of propulsion.

I don't think i'm contradicting myself in the slightest.

The car doesn't leave the ground. It is a car. It does not fly, it is not an aircraft.

It would, if it didn't have some aerodynamic devices keeping it on the ground.

But it does. So it doesn't leave the ground, so it's a car.

Simple.

Not really driven by the wheels though.

Bit like can a 747 take off on a treadmil runway, it can because it's about speed through the air, not ground speed.

Or ground effect planes flying over the sea, are they cars?

No contradiction I can see here, perhaps slightly ambiguous phrasing. During they design stage, they tried to stop it flying - successfully. Hence it doesn't fly.

Build an 800mph car to retake the record, well at least they might achieve that on American soil.
I think those guys are crazy. You can't just weld a bit of tube steel to the back of an old jet and expect to do 800 and live.

The Cosworth F1 engine is the fuel pump for the booster rockets. They have to shift something like 20 tonnes of hydrogen peroxide in 10 seconds.
It's also being the hydraulic pump.

I would make a fairly fundamental arguement about the thread title.... I think you will find 'us brits' have rather more than a hand in it!

Cant wait til my mate gets wind of this. No doubt he will have a 'mate' whos 'uncle' has a hayabusa engined mini that could hang onto the back of the bloodhound. 'only up to about 250mph though!'

OK then, perhaps an elbow as well? I must be careful not to heap too much praise upon you fellows as it interferes with your mission of self hate and handwringing that comes with any success you may enjoy. It takes your eye off the fact that you are the historic cause of all things evil and oppresive in the world; thank God that Labour and the BBC work to keep you focused on that fact. biggrin
Now, back to the car!

And yet the world can forgive us all that, but not the Americans for inventing Country and Western music.
