Never found my 1.6 or 1.9 skittish in the wet. Lift off oversteer was there for the stupid to discover come rain or shine.
Loved reading the article as they really were cars that hated to be driven slowly and the razor sharp throttle just begged to used. Would love to drive one again.
Autocar did a nice article at Silverstone where they compared the 1.9 205 Gti, 309 Gti, 405 Mi-16 and 405 Mi-16 4x4. It was wet for some of the track time.Loved reading the article as they really were cars that hated to be driven slowly and the razor sharp throttle just begged to used. Would love to drive one again.
When I went with my friend to collect his new Gti from Newcastle Motors ( the Telford Pug dealer ), they had loads of reprints of the article in the waiting area.
It's a good read

That is absolutely flipping perfect. (Except it's not grey with red carpets). But otherwise it's absolutely brilliant.
I've really got to bow out of this thread before I buy something.
Thanks Tony! Since I don't wear a watch this car is my equivalent of an expensive watch. Don't need it but it's a nice thing to have!I've really got to bow out of this thread before I buy something.
Only comes out a few times a year but I love it every time it does.

there always has to be one who lowers the tone and resorts to insults.
look im not the only one who has commented on the skittish rear in this thread, nor others in the past on various other forums.
i have owned 4 of them (plus a 309 gti with mi16 fitted) so im well qualified to comment.
obviously we are both entitled to an opinion, but in my defence mine is the one thats been posted many many times by lots of different people over the years.
it does amuse me when people get too blinkered by a car and seemingly ignore its faults.
the 205 gti is a wonderful toy - but pls pls dont think its perfect - in fact the flaws are in a way what helps make it so great, to ignore them is to do both yourself and the car a disservice.
Show me another quote that it was skittish in the wet.look im not the only one who has commented on the skittish rear in this thread, nor others in the past on various other forums.

There aren't any - so either you couldn't drive the car or you poorly modified it.

On one occasion it decided to start over-steering on a damp corner when I was only doing about 15 mph. What puzzled me was the intermittent nature of it - although maybe I'd wind my neck in for a while after a reminder it'd try and kill me after a sniff of rain. Still adore them though.
From this thread it seems like ph fall into two camps on the 205 GTI - those that love it and those that haven't driven one

I've had a few gti's and loved every one...they feel alive on every journey. In fact an xs with it's twin choke carb was my first car.
Neighbour of mine has one with 332k miles and it's still in daily use and on it's original bottom end.
A mate has a truly immaculate 309 gti at the minute, elderly owner before him racked up 32k in 22 years!
Nice! I had a red 5 dr 309 GTI with the plastic not rubber spoiler. Such a great and versatile little car, regret selling it and would buy another (one day!)... handling was superb, rock solid and factory fast. I actually think that car taught me how to drive properly --- and with respect for the limit.Neighbour of mine has one with 332k miles and it's still in daily use and on it's original bottom end.
