Great article

I first fell in love with the 205 when learning to drive in my mums 1.9 gti White one E451RUM probably not the easiest car to learn to drive in but boy was it fun and from then on always said I would own one!

I now have a powertrain modified mi16 205 producing 175.8BHP with rather lairy cams!!!

She lost part of the 4-2-1 manifold on last years Halloween tunnel run, so was off road until last week when I finally got round to getting her fixed and shot this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oixXEYP57MA&fea...

Told you it's got lairy cams!!!

Now must get my arse out there and finish her off to go Hoon her!!

Always had 205's mines fairly std to look at bar the intercooler i am getting round to changing that, this is my 9th 205 I love them always have ive also owned a clio williams, std form the clio is a fair bit quicker, but I had sooo many problems with it, it had to go, went back to a 1.9 after the clio bought a silver 1.9 gti std, years Mot for £300 cash, had it two years and it never went wrong, evan ran a 15.9 1/4 mile at santa pod, now I have a turbo one after owning an mi16, and its awsome, as a weekend driver, but I couldnt drive it everyday, the roads are too bumpy now days, or im getting old,Took it it up santa pod on sunday, Ran a 13.6 1/4 mile @105 mph whcih was great, pulled off the motorway on the way home and the head gasket went, the joys of an older car, still love it tho

Good review!

I've owned both the 1.9. 205 and the 1.9 309 GTI and found the 'ugly duckling' 309 had better handling in some cases..just in my view!

They were certainly made for driving indeed, felt so light and responsive.

However , for me they were not made to last.

Flimsy build quality , and needed to call the AA too often ......darn shame tho !

The thing i'm noticing about this thread, it's a lot of relative old timers like myself (60 months +).

Definitely a very, very PH car the old 205.

My 1.9 smile

Unfortunately it went backwards into a hedge in the wet (it does happen occasionally.. )

Its currently being rebuilt to its former glory

What can I say about it that hasnt already been said.. there arent many cars I would have cared about enough to bring back from the brink at such great cost. I havent driven it for over 2 years now, but it doesnt matter, because one day it will be back and putting a smile on my face everytime I drive it again. smile

That looks(ed) very nice, don't know how I would cope without using mine for 2 years though, I struggle with going without for a few months over winter....the methadone helps though tongue out

Yeah, two years without a 205 has been hard, have been stuck with a 2.2hdi 406 estate, its been hard frown

Thanks, Hopefully its worth the wait. Its had alot of work in the last year or so, and is nearly back to its former glory, it just needs all the parts reassembling now smile

Lots of bodywork!

I often wonder what happened to my old black 1.9 GTi (E494 KHV). T'was my second car at a mere 18 years of age - having just stepped up from a 1982 1.0L Mini - and it was brilliant! By the time it was sold on 3.5 years later, I'd blown the head gasket, then had it rebuilt with uprated cam and ported head, along with K&N filter and full Magnex exhaust. Full Koni suspension kit and front strut brace completed the car. It got me through Uni with minimal problems and provided plenty of smiles in-between.
It is much missed cloud9
Similar reg to my black 1.9 bought back in 1997, E677 KHV. I bought it from Charters in Aldershot and had the Cheetah engine conversion taking power to 150bhp, simply awesome. Had it for over 10 years and 100,000 miles. Still the best car I have ever owned (had Clio 197, Megane F1, Elise etc) smile

The Cheetah conversion - remember reading the comparison article in Fast Lane years ago when they had one up against a standard car

I had a 1.9 205 and a Golf GTI Mk2 back in the early '90s and the Pug was by far my fav of the two.
The Golf was merely very competent but the pug was exciting and invigorating and by far the better drivers car (imho of course).

I miss it terribly and have dabbled with the idea of buying one again at various times but not taken the plunge.
Now I've got the bug again.

Thanks. smile

I've not owned one yet, but I would still love too. This and the mk1 Golf GTI were lusted after so much as a child, I avoided them due to the don't meet your hero rule.

I saw one the other day in traffic next to a current Clio, it looked absolutely TINY, cars have put on so much weight since then.

Wow - don't think I have ever seen so many posts on a PH heroes article!

I have never owned one, never aspired to own one and never even been in one, let alone drive one!

But you know what - I totally respect this, it just somehow evokes emotions and seems to bring out the 'animal' inside you.

Love the wheels, the boxy square looks and it's retro charm.

Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for one, but if one came up at a price too good to refuse, then maybe... just maybe!

It would be a tough choice between this and a big bumper MK 2 Golf GTi 16v.....

If you are on a budget, you can't ignore the Golf. Its build quality is awesome especially compared to the Pug. I owned a 1.9 GTI, then a Saxo VTS and finally the Golf. Personally think the Saxo is the best drive but the Golf never let me down.
