i see its on Toyota's website now..

http://www.toyota.co.uk/cgi-bin/toyota/bv/generic_...

FT-86 II combines a free-revving boxer petrol engine and 6-speed manual transmission with light weight and a low centre of gravity for the optimum power-to-weight ratio. Both powertrain and driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible, awarding the FT-86 II lively, accessible performance, readily-exploitable dynamic abilities and maximum driving pleasure.

European Sales begin in 2012

no price range mentioned, but some nice pics on toyotas site.

Low centre of gravity affects power-to-weight ratio, eh? Perhaps seat-folding Corsa boy was onto something after all! wink

Just saw this http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11...

If Toyota manage to get the production car looking like their scion fr-s concept in the above link then I for one could be tempted. Think it looks much better.

Still no talk about the power output. How many people are going to put down a deposit without knowing that!?!

wow it does look MUCH better than the black version.

Side profile is nice, reminded me of when i saw the 8c. Not in the same league but still very nice.

Don't forget this will be a hybrid biggrin

Seriously, I dont think this will have much more than 220bhp in a toyota. But, fingers crossed it will be lightweight and the chassis will be excellent. If it doesnt meet these targets you might as well stop now.

I will be very surprised if it has more power but i do wonder, they are making some serious co2 cuts and selling more hybrids than other manufacturers across their entire range. Does that leave room for some nice engines?

If the car looks like this and Toyota or Subaru produce a version with around 300bhp I'd be very tempted. If it was around 200bhp I'd still respect that they are building it but it wouldn't interest me I'm afraid.

I don't know, yes 300 BHP would be lovely (not YOU 300 before you get excited)

But if it had impreza type power 220 - 260 ish and could manage a decent MPG I would be very tempted

It needs to have as much power as the current hot hatches or it WILL lose sales to them. 220-260 with decent MPG would be good - at least it will be a lot lighter???

I'd rather they concentrated on keeping the weight down than on joining in the hot hatch power struggle.

The engine is going to be a tweaked 2.0 in the toyota. Subaru, maybe the 2.5.

But i doubt it will be much more than 200. Doesnt sound like a lot but i bet it will weight a lot less than the available hatch backs AND it will handle better + it is RWD. It doesn't have to have excessive power figures to be an epic drive. Light weight, good chassis and RWD is a nice combination. Even with only 220bhp.

200bhp would be fine as long as it doesn't have 150lb-ft of torque like my 2.0l FTO engine. Where are they currently using the boxer engine without a turbo?

I it was a decent screamer of an engine and pulled hard all the way to a high redline then I suppose 220bhp would be adequate if they kept the weight down. However I am a bit worried that if they give it something which feels gutless, it'll be disappointing. It looks like a fast car, I'd hate for it to be all show and now go which Toyota have been known to do in the past (I'm looking at you Celica)

It is a completely different engine variation to that. It has D4-S and valve timing like you get on the Lexus IS250.

Lightweight is > Torque. The bigger the engine the heavier the car, the more power and torque you need.

Of course if it isn't light weight you may as well throw it in the bin smile
