Retro 80's Cars
Discussion
Okay.. While having a little nose while at work, I came across the Renault 21 Turbo in the 'Spotted' section. Quite liking the retro look of that.. it then lead me thinking.. what else is there in this world.
So heres a thread where you can tell us all what obscure cars from the 80's that you would love to get your hands on.
Personally always wanted an Escort XR3i in the grey/blue with the twin swept 5spoke alloys and front spots, identical to what my mum had in the early 90's.
Also loved the look of my aunties earlier XR3i convertible with the '4 spoke' pepperpots.
What are your oddities?

You mean the 'cloverleaf' alloys? So heres a thread where you can tell us all what obscure cars from the 80's that you would love to get your hands on.

Is an XR3i really an obscure car? So heres a thread where you can tell us all what obscure cars from the 80's that you would love to get your hands on.

That aside, I do fancy a Pontiac Fiero, certainly obscure in the UK. Rather more mainstream, MG Maestro Turbo, Rover 220GTI 3 door (not the coupe). Chevy Caprice. RX-7 Gen 1 (technically a 79 launch though).
I quite like the look of the z31 300ZX too, although I doubt I'd actually buy one.
I sold my '85 M535i last year and regretted it almost immediatley. Absolutely wonderful motor car and the M30 straight six really howled.
I never saw another one on the road the entire three years I had it, I even took it to a few shows and it was the only one.
I would definitely have another.

Strictly speaking, this is probably just out of the 80's and into the 90's, but still looks the part.

Got me remembering the time years ago when there was the scare at LHR where someone launched missiles. The day after the event a mate of mine collected two clover-leaf alloys from a place in Neasden and had them on the back of his motorbike. On the way past LHR he was stopped by the BIB; they asked what they were (the way they were strapped half in & out of a big top box with rags round them for protection it was hard to recognise them as wheels) and he said "missile launchers". His sense of humur didn't quite go down too well.....I've got bored of my Merc now & have been pondering a change for the past few months. Having looked at all sorts of new stuff, there really isn't anything that inspires me. I just can't get excited about spending the thick end of £25k or so an a 2 year old Audi or something (the only thing that tickles me slightly is a new shape Jag XK).
Soooooo, I have been seriously considering picking up an '80's classic & running it as a daily driver. I've seen a couple of Porsche 964's from respected indi's at around the £12 - £15k mark that could be interesting propositions. Yes, they'll require a bit more upkeep than a new fangled computer on wheels, but then I'll be saving £10 - £15k off the initial purchase price. The only question I have in the back of mind is "could I absolutely rely on an '80's classic to start & run perfectly whatever the weather every day over 20,000 miles+ per year?" If I can convince myself that the answer is yes, then I will probably go down this route.

Sorry to repeat myself for those of you who've been over on the Classics forum recently, but... can't resist posting a pic of my piece of '80s fairly-obscurity:
1989 Renault Alpine GTA D500 (the non-turbo, which is quite a bit rarer than the turbo...). Only 212 RHD ones made, according to the owners club. Not hugely fast, as the carb'd PRV 2.9 V6 is not a massively powerful engine, but very light, so goes along quite well. Huge fun to drive, and working against stereotype, very little trouble - much less grief and cost than my BMW daily driver, in fact.
