Driving it home (just bought it) I noticed a vibration and noise from left rear.

Upon further investigation..

So the question begs... How many other cars are out there, with tyres in this condition. Isn't the MOT supposed to pick up on this kind of flaw??

EDIT: Resized the pics as I noticed they were too large!

It's amazing what can happen once you drive away from a MoT centre.

Impressive bulge wink

Mine failed for the same a couple of years ago so must depend on the test centre. I'm sure the BBC tested this on Watchdog or similar and found that some test centres didn't even remove the wheels to check the pads etc.

Was the MOT done just before you bought it?

If so, it could well be a shonky/friendly MOT where certain issues were "overlooked" shall we say, assuming the car ever went near the MOT station in the first place.

I remember looking at a car that had a brand new MOT (done that week) that had a hole in the sill big enough that you could put your hand in, and a front caliper that was siezed and causing severe inbalance...

they are not allowed to remove parts during an MOT. apparently brakes will only fail now if they don't work. worn pads or discs will not fail. If you bought the car from a dealer it has almost certainly not been MOT'ed to the highest standards.

I did consider this.

That's not true either, my Shogun failed its test on Friday for having "rear pads with less than 1.5mm thickness of friction material" or something similar, despite passing the brake test.
I did say apparently as I was unsure. but was told by my MOT tester that the rules had changed. so can any one confirm

Well you're right, the MOT Tester can't remove parts to check others, they can't fail on something they can't test either.

If they can see the pads are low it's a fail. They don't take the wheel off, carrier off, pads out, measure them then put them back in and fail it!!!!

A local taxi firm would submit a car for mot with legal wheels/tyres borrowed from a similar vehicle then change back to the worn ones once the test was passed. It used to be the case that only the faulty item was checked on a retest so if you swapped wheels side to side your car would pass as the dodgy tyre was now on the other side , also an MOT only tells you the car was safe at the time of test.

So I decided to fit the spare wheel.

With the wheel now off the car, the full extent of the deformation can be seen.

This was clearly not inspected properly at MOT.

It may have been MOT'ed with other wheels/tyres fitted. I'm no expert, but you might want to check they are the original wheels for the make and model else you might find yourself uninsured.

Bloody hell! Must have been a dodgy job, unless they've started employing blind people at MOT centres.

GLOL

Please do let us know what the garage have to say about this (I assume you will be speaking to them/showing them).

Bring the MOTY back and have it quashed.
Then change the tyre.
Then pay for another MOT, not with the same testers, they find plenty thing more to pull you on now.

Or

Just go and buy a new tyre. [or new tyres]

Definitely the correct wheels.

And in response to "edo" yes I have just emailed the garage concerned and plan to follow this up with a phone call.
