Autocar shut down on-line membership
Discussion
For some months now Autocar's web site has not allowed any new members onto their site, (to check just try to sign up as a member) that no one may sign up anymore and contribute to their web-site. I suppose they do this under the guise of "technical difficulties" but this is without doubt not a technical problem.
Anyone care to tell us why they have done this? Is this a UK thing where their is freedom of speech for some but no free speech for those who are disagreed with?
thanks, j

Well I think I got my answer as to whats the deal with the Autocar shutdown, no one cares. It is mostly true that there site is rather empty of interesting content. I suppose it takes more than drifters and pictures to make a motoring web-site. j
IMO the Autocar forum is dull and not particularly user friendly. There always seems to be the same five people arguing with each other and having a go at 'outsiders'. In fact it is worse than the Evo forum for this.Personally I don't care about it because if there is anything interesting on the Autocar site, I will come straight to PH to discuss it anyway. PH has a broader, less clique audience and is much more user friendly.

Maybe the owners have another large online forum they'd prefer to pour their resources into. I don't know if such a forum exists but if it did, I'd use it.
I don't think I would, sounds like a rubbish alternative. It's highly illegal, it is discriminating against any new member, so technically any group has a case to claim.
Some people may even be able to sue for multiple discriminations.
With this in mind, I can only think they are trying to build up huge legal bills against themselves in the hope that they will become bankrupt, and maybe escape other debts.
Very clever when you look into it, but it all depends on if they just get legal action from prospective new members, or a court order to reopen membership.
