Current spec is an estimated 950bhp, which is more that current F1 cars.

They're back?! Wow...fantastic news. Let's hope they don't fold like last time. Indycar has really grown...http://champcar-ws.com/2011_schedule

Current F1s are about 750BHP or 830BHP including KERS. The champ car wont be faster around a track but in a straight line they'll be pretty mental.
Despite an F1 car having "only" around 750hp these days they are still as quick as a MotoGP bike in a straight line, and straight line acceleration matters less than you would think around most race tracks. Vettel's pole lap at the Chinese GP this weekend was a 1:33.706 which is actually faster than back in 2004/2005 when they were running the 3.0 V10.
