Since working in IT, I've had a Peugeot, a Citroen, a couple of Mazdas, a Nissan, a Honda, a Subaru and a Lotus. Don't know anyone else with a Lotus. I know someone with a Cayman, who also works in IT and didn't get on with the Lotus he test drove - he's always fancied a 911, but preferred the Caymans he could afford to the 911s he could afford.

To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if there is some truth in the idea that IT people buy a lot of Lotuses. I expect they also buy a lot of Porsches, Audis and BMWs as well, it's a career that enables people to make decent money while still in their twenties and thirties. It also tends to attract people who - to indulge in some more gratuitous stereotyping - by dint of their position on the autistic spectrum are more interested in what they think of their car than what anybody else thinks of it. "I want to drive a Lotus" versus "I want to be seen driving a...". More of a tendency for people working in the hair gelled professions to aspire to be flash gits.

Possibly - but I suspect he's the kind of man who would baulk at spending what the kind of 911 he would like costs, whether he could afford it or not!

...a Cayman who couldn't afford a 911?

Yes, though he now drives a 911, as he earns more.

...an Audi like a psychotic asshat?

Possibly. Only know a couple of people who drive Audis, one of them may have driven over-enthusiastically on occasion. To the point that they no longer own said Audi.

...an Impreza who has a goatee and shaved head?

Yep.

...a Nova with guttering for the exhaust?

Don't know anyone with a Nova.

...a Lotus and works in IT?

Yes, two people, both with Elises.

Never heard of the Lotus and IT one, i've worked in IT for some very, very large companies and none of them ever drove Lotuses. There is a Lotus Elise at my current place but it's not driven by a member of the IT Crowd i'm afraid.

I owned an Impreza with guttering for an exhaust, does that count?

Boss used to drive a BMW.

His philosophy was that as everyone expected him to drive like a tt he shouldn't disappoint them

I started a group on Facebook called "I drive a BMW but I am not an asshole"

44 members. I think that pretty much proves that most BMW drivers are indeed assholes.

Here's a response which will invite ridicule ....

I recently spent two days in California (great weather, since you ask) driving a Cayman. Loved it, and preferred it to the last 911 I drove - handles better, is smaller, and built beautifully.

BTW , here in the UK , to bury my reputation once and for all, my daily driver is a BMW, and a diesel-engined one at that ....
