Around 1000kgs, 210bhp, the minimum of driver assistance or aids (not even servo'd brakes), small light wheels and compliant suspension.
There's no real secret to building what might just end up as one of the greatest true driver's cars ever made.

Nothing really that difficult to summarise into a half dozen bullet point specifications, but increadibly difficult to replicate into a one-off tailored custom build, a viable mass market product, or anything in between.
Add a few more specification bullets to the list to include things like timeless beauty, angelic soundtrack, and genuine competition pedigree, and its then not hard to see why the 2.7RS may trancend the greatest DRIVERS car accolade, to just being one of THE greatest cars ever ..... maybe this honest, original, and standard specification could be the best of the best, heightened by being owned from new by a well regarded F1 racer.

It really does make one question modern sports cars when you think about it. I'm not a 911 fanboy (possibly down to my ignorance and lack of driving skills) but there's no doubt the car's uncomplicated spec seems in some ways more fitting as a true drivers car and maybe Watson's longterm ownership would supports this. Interesting topic I think even disregarding my comments.
I concur with the previous opinions expressed, great article.
I do like simple cars and character in cars hence why I have more emotional attachment to my 106 Rallye / RS2000 than my 350Z, though I use the Z on a daily basis. I do occasionally think about harking back to a simpler performance car, something akin to a Noble or Tuscan but I like reliability and would need something I could drive if I were very tired and not anticipating a diesel spill on the road!
It is strange how small cars from this era feel and though I miss the performance and torque of the Z driving it is not an event whereas driving this 2.7 RS or for instance my Dad's '74 Stag are.... Now there's a soundtrack (4-1's and sports exhaust)...

That was a good read, a very interesting man and an equally interesting car.
I'm surprised that there's not more comments/discussion actually, this is just the sort of thing PH should be producing in my humble opinion. Certainly better than that criminal bloke from a few weeks back!
Anyone want to hazard a guess at what the RS is worth in the market, bearing in mind the mileage, originality/patina, sole ex-F1 owner etc?

Bloody interesting question. I'll have a wild guess. Would a 100k sound right considering it's possibly a little shabby? adycav said:

Minimum 200k given current market its unrestored condition and history. The are silly money now, but they are still value in comparison to similar significant ferrari.
He's right. Many of the RS's were raced, damaged, re-built, raced etc and as a result many have iffy histories. Real collectors value low miles (somehow rebuilt cars never feel the same) and provenance above all, Watson's car has both. ISTR it might have had paint, but I bet it still would be priced at the very top of the market, now £250k.
