Isnt it the DRC suspension that costs a fortune to replace - self leveling?
^^ Even though you've said DRC, this sounds more like the B7 RS4's suspension issues to me than a BMW problem.

I'd dearly dearly love an RS6 - but everyone I have ever spoken to about them has said that the costs to keep them on the road are asbolutely astronomical. Proper frightening supercar money.

The E39 M5 is a classic - but can provide eye-watering bills.

E46 M3 and a good Indie - as others have already said would be the smart choice.

Having owned an RS6 for just over two years now I wouldn't say this has to be the case. Yes they do have their issues (DRC / chocolate box) but if you buy the right one which has already been sorted (most have now) and look after it then they are reliable and enjoyable as a daily drive.

You have to remember that they are a supercar and require preventative / regular maintenance to keep them in tip top shape - if you rag the nuts off it, abuse it and don't look after it it will be expensive and trouble!..

What about an RS4 B7 instead of the RS6? Or even an S4 if the RS4 is too much for a daily hack

Unless you need the extra space in the RS6 or M5 or the M5's ability to tow I'd go for the E46.

I bought a CSL a few months ago and absolutely love it, average around 25mpg which I suspect is a fair bit better than the others that I'd expect to be sub 20mpg. Best I've seen was 36mpg on a long motorway run.

I was very tempted by the M5 but was put of by the fuel costs and felt that the bigger heavier car would be less involving to drive.

My favourite post so far ..... Every sentence as true as the next. wink

This thread had me in the RS6 classifieds last night, and contemplating driving around with She Sells Sanctuary blasting out of the stereo cloud9

I have an RS6 and previously had an E39 M5.
The M5 made me want to drive quicker, it handled so well.
The RS6 just makes you want to waft along in comfort, but there is serious pace available if required.

Both cars cost a lot of money to maintain, you cannot run these type of cars on a shoestring budget.
For pure fun factor the M5 wins, but for everyday convenience and practicality the RS6 is hard to beat.

Whichever you go for you will not be disappointed.

For me that last line states what I believed to be the case.

Therefore try both, seat/comfort/space requirement (or not), looks of the car, Saloon or Estate, auto or manual, turbo or N/A.
Fuel has to be similar dtto Ins.
Quattro would be useful in the UK given the last 3 years of snow we have had
