RE: SOTW: Honda Accord Type R

Whatever Clarkson said, I think the reality was more along the lines of Honda UK never having to have done a warranty repair on a v-tec unit itself. Slightly different!
It's an oft quoted thing that a VTEC unit has never failed - but it's also meaningless ste as it only refers to the camshift mech.Back in 1998 I got a Civic VTi (Rover 400) with the 1.8 VTEC and it was a nightmare. Raft of faults in the gearbox, brakes and electrics but by far the worst was the engine which pinked/knocked constantly from new (really badly on unleaded - almost as badly on Super).
4 different Honda dealers and a pair of techs from Honda UK came to the conclusion - and I'm not kidding here - that
"the fault could be in any of upto 40 separate components and we're not about to replace all of them"
They admitted they had other cars with similar problems but that "as the engines were made in Germany they couldn't easily source a replacement" - which is clearly more nonsense.
My response was that I only wanted 1 thing replaced - the entire car - but someone wrote-it-off before I could challenge them over that and I've never darkened Honda's door again...
The VTEC unit may not have 'failed' but the engine was a bag of st.
The Accord Type-R I had as (one of many) loancars was fantastic tho - gear ratios aside - and hitting the VTEC in it was like a turbo-boost in any other car, the thing just took-off like a scalded cat!!
I could just sit in those seats all day tho - they're astonishingly comfy. I've been in some flash cars since and nothing has come close to em (even the current gen Audis with their fancy multi-electric Recaros don't seem as nice).

It's no big miss. The Vtec does pretty much fk all anyway, as far as I can tell it just makes the engine sound a bit raspier, there's a slight jerk when the cams go into high lift mode, but nothing else to write home about. It also makes the spontaneous MPG meter drop a bit.
Why are you posting stuff relating to your own non Type R Accord in this thread? They're completely different cars.

I'm referring to all iVTEC equiped cars I've driven, type R included. People who bleat on about "ohhh the Vtec" and my personal favourite "when the Vtec kicks in it's like a turbo" crack me right up . It's a gimmick, it doesn't do much, certainly absolutely nothing like a turbo. They're completely different cars.

Yeah...No.
Very noticable in the real Honda's I have driven. Not noticeable in shopping models
Not as much as a laggy turbo, but still there.

Firstly, the ATR is Vtec not iVtec like the later systems, the later is a more refined system, there is a deifinite kick in the earlier systems found on the ITR, ATR and Ek9 CTR. Secondly you need to look at some power graphs to see that their is a noticeable difference in the high lift cam output.

The Accord Type R runs an H22A Vtec engine - not iVtec.
The Vtec system is a little more hairy arsed than the newer iVtec system, but it's not vastly different. There's also a fair bit of rose tinted glasses syndrome going on with these cars. They may have been a bit good when they first appeared, they don't stack up well against some of the opposition now though. Still for about a grand, it would be worth a punt.no rose tinted glasses anywhere near me, me and mine at brands a couple of weeks ago.

You clearly haven't got a clue what you are talking about maybe someone needs to take you for a quick blast up a twisty road in a type R because you have no idea.Evo said:

Hi all
Car now sold to Matthew from Leeds, top bloke who knows his Hondas and he went off smiling after an entertaining drive on my local "test track".
Thanks to PH for helping it along, and sorry to all the others who've called today about it.
Not a nail, just very realistically priced for a quick sale - which is exactly what I got so smiles all round
Have a good Easter all
Cheers
Sean

Fantastic cars, had one as a company car back in the day, not quite as much fun as the Integra Type R that was also a company car but the engine is a screemer and for 1k , wasn't it Clarkson that a while ago said that out of all of the Vtec engines that had been sold not one had blown up.
Brings back very happy memories of charging round the A406 North Circular in 1999
That chap has probably got one of the best "Sheds" that has appeared on here for £1000.

No, someone needs to take you for a blast in any one of a miriad of better cars, then you might drop the blinkered fanboy outlook and see what I mean. Type R Hondas are a good giggle, and relatively cheaper than some of the better performing opposition. You would then "have a clue what you are talking about", and I might give more credence to what you say. When I was test driving some Hondas, with a mind to either saving a lot of money by going for a frugal shopping type car, or saving a bit of money, but maintaining a bit of a smile, I test drove a DC5, an FN2 CTR, and the shopping trolley I settled for. The sales guy I went out in the type Rs with, was banging on about "can you feel the extra grunt the Vtec gives you", and "these handle really nicely on these twistys don't they?". I could hardly stop myself laughing. They handled okay, given they were FWD front engined, but not on a par with something like a Scooby, Evo, Elise / Exige. Obviously we are not comparing like for like here, but some of the fanboy crap I was being subjected to was hilarious.Edited by Gwagon111 on Sunday 24th April 14:16

As an ex Accord type-R owner I can honestly say you are talking ste. And this is no "fanboy" talk. As it happens I dont even own a Honda any more Edited by Gwagon111 on Sunday 24th April 14:16
DC5 and FN2 are NOTHING like the accord. Please go have a drive of one and rethink your statement
For £1,000 this has to be the best drivers SOTW.
Lets not ruin a good SOTW arguing with mr gwagon, he still doesnt know what he is talking about (and if you look at the list of cars I've owned you'll see i'm no fanboy) and although its a few years since I last had an Accord Type R I can clearly remember how good it was to drive and I have a long list of cars to compare it with.

Finding one that isn't a dog seems to be the hard thing. I might try and get my mitts on one and then we will see.DC5 and FN2 are NOTHING like the accord. Please go have a drive of one and rethink your statement
Well, this rapidly degenerated into a whinefest didn't it.
Good shed, interesting, different. Personally I would want to see PH buy and run more of these sheds. Really learn something about them. Rather than 'ownership' reviews of cars that are provided free by car manufacturers and written about as such.

Good to see a £1k punt work out. Although having 10yrs experience at Honda must have helped the buyer's confidence levels compared to most of us.
As to ATR's and quickness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U53l435-_70 Seems Ed knows how to keep it in VTEC.
