RE: SOTW: Honda Accord Type R

Honda, why don't you sell a car like this now?
Because the market for new cars like this is very, very small. How many private buyers will spend nigh on £30k on a sporty, thirsty, Honda saloon?
In the past, this kind of thing would have been chosen by company car drivers - but now the tax bill on this kind of thing is crippling.
I've always been a big fan of these, sans boot spoiler. If I was looking for shed I'd consider it. Remove badges, sell the spoiler, alloys and fit steel's. Get lucky with the engine management light repair and just top the oil every 1k. Fingers crossed , drive & smile. Then again if I really wanted one I'd be very happy to give £4k+ for excellent example. Great cars.

Indeed - it's been an absolute tragedy watching Honda slowly throw all that good work and good will out the window and revert back to being a old farts manufacturer. The stricter exhaust emission controls probably didn't help much with the Type R's - but still, I am still completely confused with the direction Honda has taken in the past 5 years. To a certain extent, the Accord/TSX is now too damnably big and heavy (as are most moderns) to work in the same manner. Ok, 4WS or SH-AWD or even RWD could have fixed that.
But Honda seems to have shied away from BMW, Ferrari etc and moved towards Hyundai/Kia and undone all the good work.
Talk about throwing out the bath with the sprog & the dirty water...
This old ATR could be a collectible museum piece pretty damned soon!
Also what happened to the guy on here that was fitting the massive Turbo to one (original ones not Euro R)
It looked a great project

Hi all
Car now sold to Matthew from Leeds, top bloke who knows his Hondas and he went off smiling after an entertaining drive on my local "test track".
Thanks to PH for helping it along, and sorry to all the others who've called today about it.
Not a nail, just very realistically priced for a quick sale - which is exactly what I got so smiles all round
Have a good Easter all
Cheers
Sean

Fantastic cars, had one as a company car back in the day, not quite as much fun as the Integra Type R that was also a company car but the engine is a screemer and for 1k , wasn't it Clarkson that a while ago said that out of all of the Vtec engines that had been sold not one had blown up.
Brings back very happy memories of charging round the A406 North Circular in 1999
That chap has probably got one of the best "Sheds" that has appeared on here for £1000.
At last! A welcomed return to decent shedding!
Always fancied an Accord Type R, but for the £3k premium on a good one you are venturing into Civic Type R territory...
Can I cheekily suggest a Nissan Primera GT as an alternative? It doesn't have the same straight line speed as the Accord, but it is dirt cheap, and from what I hear far more reliable!
I've also heard rumours that the Primera GT has Nurburgring tuned suspension...

When we had these as company cars we took the opportunity to max them out, Integra and Accord Type R's. The Integra was a little quicker off the line but the Accord had more oomph once you were into three figures.
Also remember using 1/4 of a tank of fuel between one junction of the M1 in the Integra (I'm sure it was a fuelling issue ) Still easily the best FWD car i have ever driven, both of them are so well focussed on the road.

Whatever Clarkson said, I think the reality was more along the lines of Honda UK never having to have done a warranty repair on a v-tec unit itself. Slightly different! Do rather like these myself though I'd be inclined to pay the extra for one with a few of the issues ticked off the list. Still, as has been said I'm surprised this has dipped into SOTW territory even if it was a quick sale ad.
I'd still prefer a DC2 or Civic EG/EK over this though as I'm in no need of the practicalities the saloon body brings. Plus less weight to lug around of course even if this is one of the best handling fwd saloons of the past few decades

Well my ATR is on 171k and I wouldn't sell it for 2k let alone 1k.
The engine management light is probably where the EGR gases recirculate, the rails get gunged up with dried oil type stuff and the light goes one, normally from poor fuel and short stop start journeys.
As someone has said above a tight engine and good gear box will sell for north of 1k, so it would be worth more than 1k breaking the car up.
Only 1700 left on the road, thats about right lots of idiots now owning and crashing them.

I've just downgraded from a Scoob to a 2 ltr iVTEC Accord. I'd imagine a spiced up type R version would be a terrifying prospect if the chassis is as bad as mine. As far as I can tell, the VTEC system is just there to make the engine note change at high revs. The less said about the feel, or lack thereof from the steering, the better. I thought about upgrading the motor in mine when I picked it up, having driven it a bit more, I've changed my mind.
The Type R is not like a normal Accord. This is going to come across all fanboy'ish but the chassis really is a good one, the front end is so pointy, it's like a bigger version of the Integra Type R. It really doesn't drive like a 4 door saloon.
The engine and gearbox combination is slightly out of sync with it dropping out of Vtec on most upshifts due to the ratios but it's still easy enough to make pretty quick progress when the mood takes you.
The rear spoiler is OTT and I'd much rather a spoilerless of Type S spoiler, otherwise I like the BTCC esque looks.
Well i am the one that bought the car and what a car it is its a true honest car that is still very tight in the way it drives and it was as said in the advert.
what a great car and it will be looking perfect very soon as i have worked for Honda for over 10 years so know these cars well .I have to say a big thanks to beemer for being a spot on guy and just a genuine bloke.
Cleaning day tomorrow for me

The car doesn't drop out of VTEC if you time the changes correctly, it needs some practice though! You need to change gear literally when the limiter is about cut in at 8800 rpm, or is it 8600 rpm.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
