I didn't feel like shelling out for a leggy Golf GTi last year... so I drove an Octavia vRS and bought it. Some people say they prefer a Golf to drive, but a well-cared-for Octavia's a much nicer steer than a shagged Golf. Room in the boot for my mountain bike too.

The newer ones are over 200bhp, and respond very well to a remap. In fact a chap at work has over 260bhp out of his with just a Shark remap.

I think they're less understeery than the Focus as well as they're lighter at the front end.

Don't know if it's already been mentioned, but the current shape Leon Cupra can now be had for £10k. 07/57 reg cars with around 50k miles on them are just dipping under £10k.

300bhp with a remap...

Yes, just a shame they're so damned expensive! In all honesty I'd rather an SIR-II

I know it's a bit over budget but these are dropping in price fast now.

I had one for a while and was a good car, and dare I say it fun as well. The V6 howl is very addictive!

If you can live with the crap fuel economy I'm sure you could find a good one for your budget.

If you just don't like Skoda badges or an Octavia's lack of style (like you don't like BMW 1 series), then fair enough. Each to their own, and I certainly wouldn't argue that it's the last word in fashion.

But if you've written off the vRS because you think it won't keep up with a Golf GTi, it just isn't true. Unfettled Golf GTi's in your budget will be 197bhp which is the same state of tune as the Octavia's identical engine. An Octavia vRS petrol weighs 1360kg while a Golf GTi 1328kg, which is about the same weight difference as carrying an 8 year old child in the Golf. It's only going to blunt performance a fraction of a percent and you'd have to have remarkable levels of sensitivity to notice.

In fact, the reason I bought a Skoda instead of a Golf was that the ones I tested were nicer to drive- I'm sure new Golfs are better, but the leggy ones I tried in my budget weren't in as good a state as the low mileage, well looked after Skodas for the same money.

(Taking my biased fanboy hat off: If you want the same VAG TFSI engine in a higher state of tune, the 07-onwards Cupra had 236bhp. Some people reckon they don't go round corners as well as a Golf GTi; I couldn't tell you because I never gave one a steer. But if the Octavia and Golf are too slow for your tastes, it might be worth a look. If I were shopping now, a CTR might ring my bell too.)

The Skoda badge really does not bother me at all. An Occi vrs is 7.1 ish seconds 0-62 as opposed to mid 6's or lower compared to everything else in my list. The Occi is a heavy old car too and not renouned for the class leading chassis. They are generally regarded as a cracking compromise. Dont think id get a Golf. Just far too sensible. If i did get the VAG id buy the Vrs(07 Cupra are still holding value like nothing else allowing me to only just touch a leggy one at my budget)

Id love to be able to afford the 147 GTA but would prob be too scared to buy one. All of the cars have their serious faults and I really appreciate everyones feedback.

It has to be said that SEAT are making excellent hot hatches now. I'd never really thought much about their cars, seeing them as the less obvious little brother of Audi and VW. And of course, they never seme to get the 'budget beauties' mentions that Skoda attract.

Of course, I then saw Mastodon2's Leon Cupra R and I was quite blown away by it. Especially for the value, it's a fantastic hot hatch. Incredible power, excellent build quality, aggressive looks - a fantastic car. I think it speaks volumes that he was looking for a Type R or something like that at the time and ended up in the SEAT.

dont get another hot hatch if shes getting an ST.

Get a 350z or something, will be quicker all round and is much more interesting.

perfect with enough money left to pay the insurance for a couple years.

EP3 CTR - Vtec but soon to be three generations old and lack of torque might be a pain for daily driving.

What! Lol have you driven one ?

Weve put 80 000 miles on ours in 5 years , goes like stink ,driven everyday and gets better with age.

Plus every one rates these above the newer ones.

Torque pah , just need the right gear.

Im going to be keeping the car for about 4/5 years so by then the EP3 design will be 15 years old. Thats a good age for a hatch.

Like people are saying maybe worth getting something special. My dads egging me on to get an Alfa.....either the 147 GTA or even the 156 GTA. The sound is mental I know but surely the costs will eat me. Same with the mental 5.7ltr Monaro;s that are in range......could I be that mental?

A Monaro would be awesome. I would not bother with a hot hatch if you already have one in the family wink

Besides, the ST is a great well rounded car. You'll be hard pressed to beat the overall package.

It it was me I would either go large displacement, or 2ltr turbo nutter with AWD.

Have you driven the Octavia?

0-60 is never gonna be good with FWD. I have tested mine 30-70 at a very repeatable 5.2s. It's not a slow car!
