My experience was completely the opposite when selling the RX8 at the end of last year. Within 10 hours of it being on AT two wide boys were driving it away for £100 less than I was asking (it's worth about 10% of that now biggrin ).

Likewise though they didn't give a toss about the mazda service history or my meticulous topping up of oil, they just wanted to "get some bling alloys on it init bruv". Probably wrecked by now frown
What? How?!

I've been trying to sell my RX-8 for months now and no luck. I've priced it at the bottom end of the market but there are cheaper ones out there with higher mileage and possible engine issues. Buyers seemingly don't care about history or maintenance, it's all about price.

As said, I'd bite your hand off if I was after an E39 M5. cloud9

At the end of the day it's a big, executive saloon, 12 years old and 70,000 miles. Such cars depreciate heavily for one reason - there's not much demand for them in the used market. Punters are nervous of the "big bills" potential. Not to mention the rising cost of petrol and insurance. It may cost fiesta money but it'll never be run for fiesta money.
I would have thought that your average punter looking for an M5 would be an enthusiast, and hence would know exactly what they're getting in to...

I think that statement is largely irrelevant.

I found that eBay brings out the idiot wanting you to do a straight swap for a car worth a quarter of the price of your own but Auto Trader was fine for me. Having said that, my price was close to the dealer prices as I knew it was in better condition than most. I think that being at the 'bottom of the market' will just encourage people who either can't afford your car or they will assume you are desperate to sell.

I had 2 actual viewings of my car. One from a wide boy trader who wanted to push some of his crap stock to me and left with nothing. The other from a guy who clearly knew what he was looking at and spent 2 hours looking over the car, asking questions, test drive etc, paid £250 less than asking price and took it there and then.
You hit the nail on the head, right there...

It's not just cars, but practically anything you try and sell on Ebay attracts the 'idiots'.

Why? Because Ebay has marketed itself as a haven for bargain hunters - which has the negative effect of driving values (note I didn't say prices..) down.

I have a favourite quote:

"Everybody knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing" which about sums it up for me...

Get a decent deposit, at least £100, and MAKE IT CLEAR it is non returnable if they change their mind for any reason, AND the price agreed is firm.
I thought the current accepted wisdom was a 'no deposit' policy?

The car stays 'for sale' until the buyer stumps up the full amount. The seller is then not turning away other potential purchasers whilst there is still a chance a numpty buyer can forfeit his £100 when he realises his insurance will be £2000 not the £500 he thought it might be, or he finds (or wins on ebay) a similar car for £250 less than yours.

The buyer also is better protected if they conclude the deal once and for all as they could spend several days organising insurance and a convenient collection time only to find someone else has appeared and gazumped them and the seller has just had to kindly returned your £100.

That really nice but why do you have to be so far away from me frown.

I sold a Integra Type R within 12 hours of putting the ad on Gumtree.

I put the ad up in at about 2am and car was sold by mid day, but I did get allot of idiots offering really low amounts for it and text messages making offers for it with out even seeing the car.

The calls and texts continued for a few days until I had chance to remove the ad.

Sold it to a dealer who was great guy to deal with.

Thinking about it I may have priced it too low for it to go so fast.

I can only sympathise with you. I put my dad's old Sony plasma on gumtree and judging by some of the responses I wonder how some of these people find their way out of bed in the morning. Utter, total retards.

It's an odd market, I don't know where to look now so I look everywhere.

It's worth noting that Autotrader will take around £40 for the privilege of advertising your car, and ebay is around £12.

There aren't that many private cars on Autotrader these days!

I'm glad it's not just my ads that attract them.

I placed one on Ebay

"MX5 hardtop in good condition. Fits Mk1 and Mk2 models. Lined and has Heated rear screen"

That was the full ad.

First Question: "Will it fit a Mk2, is it lined, does it have a HRW ?"

banghead

I replied with "Read the ad"

She replied "You are a rude seller"

So I demonstrated how rude I could be in my reply.

biggrin

I've found that writing a huge amount of detail with lots of pics helps weed out the thick chancers from the genuine buyers. The council dwelling scumbags tend to get bored after a few syllables but those buying with a purpose will read on.

BTW, great car and good luck with the sale. Wonder if it'd be worth you calling up Munich Legends and seeing if they would buy it off you?

Whilst I sympathise heavily with anyone trying to sell a car privately I'm slightly surprised to see in your only other posts this month you're questioning whether the car is running properly?

Maybe people are doing some internet research (I know I do now) and coming up with doubts?

Price it fairly (even slightly under) then add "No offers". Stick to it.

Or go a bit further back and find out why the OH doesn't want to drive the car anymore.

OP - there are some tops sleuths on the interwebs and this maybe casuing some issues with potential buyers?
Yeah, it seems the car is a bit down on power. Noisy vanos etc etc.

Only purchased in November 2010 too

Assuming the OP has sorted out all the issues the car is very keenly priced. I just think insurance costs, maintenance costs and the price of fuel is the death knell to these type of cars - sadly frown

The cheek of it! Imagine if you'd read that after buying it. I'd be furious and back around for a quiet word or 2.

From the ad:

"Nothing materially wrong with it a genuine car."

Apart from the front end damage and accident...
