A garage with no offical links to a manufacturer but has specialises in their models, often employing ex dealer mechanics etc.

Independant Mechanic garage IIRC.
As opposed to a branded dealership.

It depends on which definition you use. Most people may think of an independent as non-main dealers (i.e. back street garages, specialists etc.) and not chains (kwik-fit, universal etc.).

To me, indie means not a MD or chain and nothing more. I would then want more information if I wanted a specialist for given car/marque.

It's a garage run by people of Caribbean descent, in that when you ring them up and describe a problem with your car, the bloke says "you'd better bring it indie garage mon".
