Is this true? I'm currently actively looking for an S2000 and my mum mutters darkly about it being the wrong time to buy. Is this really the case? Do prices fluctuate or is it a question of supply, or not???

I'm not particularly bothered because I will be selling a much cheaper 'vert and, well, I want to use my new car, just interested...

Lets go back 25 years or so - there werent so many wrag-tops and certainly no folding tin-tops to my recollection. We always reconed to shift more soft tops from Easter onwards until Octoberish - but as far more people go for open air driving now, I dont think that really applies any longer. Just about 24/7 open air in my CLK - ah!!! except last November or when my wife's had her hair done!

I'm with your Mum here - although I have no documentary evidence to back it up.

I feel there are more buyers for convertibles & motorbikes once the weather improves so I suppose the laws of supply & demand may push the prices up.

An MX-5 and an S2000 an local garages have both gone up by a £1000 since the start of this good weather, both cars have been on sale since around Jan because I looked at both. So yeah at least locally to me they vary frown

haha i had a little snigger at that to. if I listened to my mum id have bought a brand new Kia on 5 years finance because id be getting a nice new car that no one has messed about with - so glad I ignore my mum when it comes to cars!

Anyhow, back on topic yes I think convertible prices go up in the summer because more people see them with the roof off an think that it's a good idea. Come winter people seem convinced that having a convertible still means the roof leaks, its cold/damp and generally people think tin tops are better.

One of my friends dad buys upwards of a dozen mk4 escort cabriolets for <£500 each in the winter, chucks them in his barn then waits until late spring to give them a quick coat of polish an sell them for £1k EASILY.

It depends I think. I've seen here prices probably should go down actually (in Norway) for MX-5s. No one really was selling and so there was around 20 cars for sale. Now there is over 60, and so it looks like supply could be a lot higher, and therefore prices should be lower. Obviously the demand will be more, but it seems now that there's not the demand there.

A lease company I deal with held back a load of convertibles from the winter before last and sold them the following year - despite being older I am assured they fetched a lot more money overall.

hehe My mother doesn't give me car advice, at least not that I'd listen to. She just mutters darkly!

I did notice a nice-looking but dodgy s2000 which "sold" on eBay a couple of weeks ago for £3990- no reserve auction. Garage relisted it a week ago as "Reduced for Easter" at £4995! But that seems the exception.

I'm not really fussed as looking for the right car and wasnt in the position to buy until now... And there's no way I'm rattling around in my MX 5 until winter!!
