0-60 7 secs, 40mpg +, £6000 budget. Is this possible?

Faia VRS with a decent remap will do that, and more MPGsmile

It doesn't do 40 miles on a gallon of fuel.

You wont average 40mpg in an Audi S3 and the costs of keeping it on the road will make the fuel economy irrelevent.

Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI.

1.9 TDI engine, 160bhp standard, remap to approx 190bhp, with about 300lbft

50mpg on a run, and theyre starting at approx £6k now.

Edited because I think you made an error.....
My old 172 Cup used to always average 35/36 mpg. Not a lot less.

When I try my 182 can get 35mpg out of a full tank, but if it's driven normally (and as intended, which I assume the OP wants to by making a 0-60 time a requirement) my average tank mpg is usually 27-28.

You obviously want something quick that is sensibly priced to buy and run.

Currently running around in two

One which nearly fits the bill if its remapped. 2004 Passat 1.9TDI Highline. Worth 3 grand. Quick enough 45mpg.

One which fits spot on. BMW 530iA LPG - Averaged 24mpg on gas since purchase, equating to 44mpg in spirited normal driving. Quick, reliable, well specced and cheap to run and buy (worth less than 3 grand now).

What more could you want!

What about a E46 320cd? It's got 150hp and does a close 0-60mph and I get over 45mpg - handles well too and fits the costs. I would guess a remap would most certainly sort out the performance side of things too.

Remapping a TDi can spell death to the clutch sooner rather than later. But then it might be on its way out anyway and just replace with a stronger one.

Skoda fabia vrs would be first, then the seat ibiza fr second. I had a clio 172 before the vrs, which would also meet your criteria, although the vrs and ibiza remapped (same engine),was easy 50mpg and felt much quicker than my 172,which managed a respectable 38 mpg average but 40mpg+ was easily achievable. God dam phone
