Just wondered if there is anything out there for anywhere from 8-15k that is a fast (200bhpish <7 seconds), smallish petrol car that can still do 35mpg if cruising at 80mph and generally over a normal driving life so bits of town, motorway, hooning, etc.

My MR2 does that although it's not exactly recent wink

I think maybe a modern BMW 330i might be able to do that; my E36 328i gets just over 30 MPG average at that speed, and previous owner reckoned it would 36 MPG on a 70 mph run... so I'd imagine a more modern engine may even do a touch better than that. 0-60 roadtested in places at 6.5 seconds, and 147 mph.

A Clio 172 or 182 would easily do it, especially an early 172 (which is lighter and has taller gearing than the later ones) or a 172 Cup, as both are the lightest. My 182 could get about 38 MPG on an 80 mph run. 0-60 roadtested at about 6.5 seconds, 138 mph.

Elise K-series will do it - probably about 45 MPG on an 80 mph run. 0-60 of even a 118 bhp K-Series Elise is under 6 seconds, although top speed is not high, it will probably touch 125 mph if lucky.

I think a few more modern things will get this. My S60 T5 get's around 30mpg at this speed. And the T5 is 10 years old, notoriously thirsty and is heavy... Something a bit newer and maybe a bit smaller and maybe a bit less powerful I think the 35mpg @ 80mph is realistic...

I averaged 36.8mpg in the M3 CSL when driving from home to Mallory, about 150 miles mostly motorway with around 30 miles of A roads mixed in

overall I generally get an average of 25mpg mostly A roads to work through the week with a sprint race every other weekend or so, which is very good considering the performance thats available.

Best fun car i've had for mpg was a clio 172 which seamed to do 35-40mpg almost everywhere except on track where it could almost get into single figures

My 350Z hovers around the 32-35mpg mark at 80mph. Well, at least according to the computer...

An unmodified Corrado VR6 will do that. Mine certainly did before I started modifying it and plenty of other owners and ex-owners will concur.

This thread will bring out the people that have no idea what mpg their car does, but have once seen a high figure and quote it...

My old Elise would do 40mpg or so fairly easily on a run IIRC.

Can't speak for other people, but I have 14 years of data for my car on a spreadsheet. Pretty much every tank of fuel I put in it.
I could bore you with a PDF of if it you want.

A V6 A3 or mk5 golf R32 won't do it. At 80mph I'll get roughly 29mpg. And at 145mph (on an autobahn) I'll get 27mpg.

Hmmmm it's not hard though is it? Fill up, set trip meter, fill up, work out how many litres/gallons you used for the miles you've just travelled?
