Not using the correct your/you're.
Did that on purpose so my post would appeal to a wider audience.. Namely, grammar police.. smile
Presumably the lack of apostrophe in "thats" and not capitalising "i" were also intentional?

As to being 18, maybe that is why i feel like overtaking brandishes me with the "chav" brush?
Yes, maybe when you grow up you'll feel differently about it. And developing some overtaking skill will help too. As much as I disagree with your initial statement, sloppy overtaking does seem to be a habit of chavs.

I used to overtake all the time in my Focus Zetec, and that wasn't quick at all. Plan ahead and do it right though, and you're laughing. It was a car for the skilled overtaker, because it there was no massive rush of speed in any gear, so it made you concentrate on getting your speed and the gear right, as opposed to lazy BMW style 6th gear overtakes.

In the old days when a police officer was required to follow a speeding motorist to determine that they were, in fact, speeding the distance often quoted was 3/10 of a mile. An over speed limit overtake would most likely have lasted less than 3/10 so no problemo. Today however, cameras and radar guns reduce some of that as 60mph (or whatever) is a measure of distance over time whereas the camera/radar technology captures velocity in an instant.

Back to the OP's question, I do it all the time and couldn't care less at the curious waving of the hand gesture or stupid flashing of headlights that the other driver uses as acknowledgement.

Nice one. smile Though given by your inability to use a full stop, I doubt it.

As I mentioned in my previous post, perhaps you feeling like a 'chav' is owing to popular public perception regarding 'fast' (assertive?) driving.

In my case best spec for the money, it was between a 325d and a 318d so I took the obvious choice (well I should say my dad since it is his car)

what does thinking overtakes are impossible without 200bhp make you?

overtaking in a low powered car is much more fun, timing your 'run up' to where you know there's a bit with good visibility then just sweeping past is much better than 'pull out, mash right foot to the floor'

I know where you are coming from. I have a Ford Focus and I'm a "young male driver".

I always feel as if people are calling me a tosser when I pass them, but frankly I couldn't care less. If they didn't pootle about doing 45mph on a straight NSL road I'd have no reason to fly past them.

Its quite embarrassing when you make such a song and dance about overtaking in a low powered car and they pull up next to you at the next set of lights!

Run up? I do hope you are joking, im all for banana shaped overtakes, but not a run up, in the hope that when you get around a bend, nothing is coming (is that what you mean?)

I used to feel that people thought I was being more aggressive overtaking in my Focus than my MX5. I probably overtake less in the MX5 but I suppose it fits with the car, that it should be driven quickly. Mind you, the Focus with it's black Zetec body kit had a fairly aggressive look. It looked like a much faster car than it was, and I always felt it caused more of an impression when overtaking than the MX5.

I think he means leaving enough distance to gain at least a 15 MPH advantage before committing.

You need a very long, straight and clear piece of road to even contemplate this
manoeuvre (sp?).

I had plenty of practice of this in my shed of a Fiat Punto!

Edited for grammar.

I thought the idea of overtaking other vehicles was to allow you to continue at the speed you wish to travel rather than some bizarre point scoring thing. Therefore the vehicle you do it in would be irrelevant.

I don't understand this chav comment or the idea that you might somehow be ashamed of wanting to make safe progress in a car.

Guess I must be out of touch with UK society.

It's all about momentum and forward planning in low powered cars. I don't think it should make you look like a chav if it is warranted. For no reason, maybe.
I often get funny looks overtaking in a Civic with 'Operated by Hamsters' on the back. I have to always put it in 3rd gear, there's no power in 5th.

Had a good one the other day - two cars doing 35-40 in a 60. I wait until the road is clear, overtake one, and go back into the middle before partaking in the next manouver (sp?), pull in safely, and notice the old boy in the car behind pulling the w@@ker sign at me as I pull away!
I did everything safely, didnt cut them up or anything - not sure why I deserved it? Maybe small penis syndrome, and him not liking a girl in a 1.4 Civic overtaking him!
Maybe he shouldn't have been doing almost half the speed limit in a 60!

An odd statement from someone whose profile claims they are both 18 years old and an IAM Advanced Driver.
In what way is that odd? Just because i have passed my AD test doesnt mean i feel i can lord it above other road users and not give a hoot about the impressions my driving give out. It also doesnt necessarily mean my overtaking skills are any better than those of others.
As to being 18, maybe that is why i feel like overtaking brandishes me with the "chav" brush?
It's odd because if you've completed your IAM you should be concentrating on driving a certain way to a certain standard, not concerning yourself with imaginary and irrelevant 'opinions' you choose to remotely apply to other drivers without any basis in fact. The fact you are 18 makes it even odder as when I was 18 overtaking was my favourite hobby. Chill out, you'll have ulcers by the time you're 30.

My rules for overtaking are to do it as quickly as possible. If that means exceeding the speed limit for a short while then so be it.

I couldn't give a flying fk what other road users think. They're driving Kia Picantos for a reason you know.

I overtake all the time in the regular family cars, normally the overtakeees carry on as before, sometimes they congratulate my driving prowess by flashing their lights and making a hand gesture that indicates that they would like to use their hands to make love to my organ of immense dimensions smile

Of course its ok and not chavvy to make a well executed overtake whatever you are driving.
