Overtaking when in a normal, family type car.

My rules for overtaking are to do it as quickly as possible. If that means exceeding the speed limit for a short while then so be it.
I couldn't give a flying fk what other road users think. They're driving Kia Picantos for a reason you know.

Takes a little planning with my whopping 55bhp it's still possible though
I know what OP is talking about, I recently went from a fast daily driver to a 520d, it's just not the same, the overtake isn't as assured the poor little engine is giving its all but there isn't any real shove.
If you are used to a motorbike or sub 5 sec 0-62 car then overtaking in a low powered family car is a real shock.
The best thing to do is adapt your driving to the BHP of the car you're driving and plan ahead.
I kind of understand where the OP is coming from.
There is something a little desperate about having to absolutely rag the nuts off a shopping car to get round a vehicle that is doing 10mph less than you'd like to be doing.
In a performance car it's not problem - effortless. But in something underpowered it can seem like you are hell bent on getting round them - it takes a massive amount of effort - and can, to all intents and purposes make you look like a bit of a tool.
At least that's what I think he's getting at. Could be wrong - I often am.

It's all about momentum and forward planning in low powered cars. I don't think it should make you look like a chav if it is warranted. For no reason, maybe.
I often get funny looks overtaking in a Civic with 'Operated by Hamsters' on the back. I have to always put it in 3rd gear, there's no power in 5th.
Had a good one the other day - two cars doing 35-40 in a 60. I wait until the road is clear, overtake one, and go back into the middle before partaking in the next manouver (sp?), pull in safely, and notice the old boy in the car behind pulling the w@@ker sign at me as I pull away!
I did everything safely, didnt cut them up or anything - not sure why I deserved it? Maybe small penis syndrome, and him not liking a girl in a 1.4 Civic overtaking him!
Maybe he shouldn't have been doing almost half the speed limit in a 60!
Well done! Not wanting to divert this into a sexist rant about men/ women drivers, but I honestly don't think I've ever been overtaken on a single carriage way by a lady driver. On my daily commute on the A272 and A30 I overtake numerous plodders in either my Astra SRI or Astra GTE. As both have (factory) spoilers I assume they think I'm a bit of a maniac or a habitual speeder or something, but I get over it quickly. As said, the main point is to plan it and carry it out safely, then you have nothing to worry about. I often get funny looks overtaking in a Civic with 'Operated by Hamsters' on the back. It is annoying when a convoy sits behind a slow moving lorry or something without big enough gaps to leap frog in, but then there's no such thing as a 'perfect drive' these days I reckon.

No there isn't.If your shopping car has sufficient performance to pass a moving obstacle and you don't, that's sad.

Maybe Mr Gearchange needs to change gear more? There is something a little desperate about having to absolutely rag the nuts off a shopping car to get round a vehicle that is doing 10mph less than you'd like to be doing.

Looking at your car list, shifting and a small bit of planning should allow you to overtake smoothly with no problems... I use to manage it fine despite raging its nutz off with a 60 odd bhp heavy corsa down country roads with some planning.

Er yeah - thanks for the input.
I wasn't looking for tips on how to drive - merely providing an empathetic viewpoint to the OP
Dont worry Mr, i see where you are coming from. And i completely agree with you. I suspect the others who claim to have no concern for ragging it past other road users, are also the ones who dont indicate off roundabouts. * Can of worms now open *I wasn't looking for tips on how to drive - merely providing an empathetic viewpoint to the OP

WTF? How can any form of overtaking be classed as 'chavvy'? Would I follow a tractor for miles after mile as not to appear chavvy? No. Too many things are classed as chavvy these days (most I agree with) but overtaking! Lost for words.
Not only that but the OP also feels paranoid when he does it (see his second post) yet he's an IAM advanced driver. Wonder how he feels when he overtakes a bus - all those people thinking such bad things. It beggars belief. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
