We want a 4wd for the snow and we also want the room for a dog and buggy etc so a saloon is no good.
How about a Subaru Legacy Outback then?
He said she didnt like estates!

but how about a forester, the newest version isnt as boxy as the old type.

Chev Captiva? - Not sure about the badge though? Too average?
Hyundai ix35 - Looks quite good but still a Hyundai. They do look like they have come a long way though. Any good?
Why not go for the best car, rather than let your snobbery make the decision?

It`s been mentioned earlier in the thread but go and have a look at a Skoda Yeti.

Yeti is what I would look at, I also rate the Forester highly, mine has been much better than I expected.

Don't see it mentioned yet but Discovery 3? At the stronger end of the price range, but if you're considering an XC90 you'd be mad not to have a look at one of these too. Might fall foul of your wife's opinion re: agricultural looks.

Interesting take from somebody with two Mercedes!

What makes you dismiss the OP's opinions as badge snobbery, it's his hard earned buying the car, if he doesn't want a car why should he buy it!

O.P. I would say you have a few suggestions, but it's really going to be down to how your wife feels driving a few of these things, try to get as long a test drive as you can in the top contenders. She may find some of them feel to big (regardless of physical dimensions).

The one thing I'll add is, maybe consider LPG. I met a guy at a filling station yesterday with a Disco TDV6, and he was paying a lot more for fuel than I am in my Supercharged FFRR on LPG.

Thats what my Mrs went for. We have a 3.0 petrol but the overall economics of the petrol bearing in mind we would have had to pay a lot more for a diesel work out well

Its great in the snow, and has all the space in the back we need for sons guitars, amps, pedals etc, so buggies and dogs are no problem.

It is very well made, quiet and comfortable, has all the toys you need and leather etc.

I bought my Mercedes for reliability, longevity and good residuals not for any badge reasons, all I was saying was don't overlook a decent car because of badge snobbery and end up with a heap of st like an M class just 'cause it has the right badge.
Or buy a secondhand Range Rover and try to shoehorn it into every post you ever put on here.

A couple of months ago we traded in my Wifes 320D for a Freelander 2, as we got sick of it being parked up 2 months a year & she absolutely loves it, the best car she ever had.

I must say I am very pleasantly surprised by how nice it is to drive & also the fuel economy is better than I thought - we are really pleased with it.

Its almost as good as my Subaru Legacy ...
