Thought about a Mk4 R32? They can be had for similar money to a Cupra R and i'm avraging about 28Mpg in mine just now. 4WD, V6 burble etc. Not had to spend a penny on it yet other than service items like oil/filters etc. Might be a happy middle ground between your savage GT4 and a more sedate FWD hatch.

I haven't considered one as a couple of mates have had them and weren't overly impressed with the performance/feel of them. I would like to go back to FWD too I think (I will now be cast out fo the PH family biggrin)

Fair enough, i'm going to go and cry my eyes out now...

Front wheel drive, decent economy, cheapish to run but with a bit of poke. Instantly i think of Ep3 Type R, Dc2 and the Renaultsport range.

If you're still keen on the Leon Cupra R's i would highly recommend seatcupra.net.

You'll be able to find answers to any question you may have!

Nothing personal biggrin I have toyed with the idea of a Type R but needing to wring it's neck to get decent performance has put me off, my mate used to have one and got really bad MPG from it due to this. They are a bit too common near me also. I wanted a bigger car than a Clio and wouldn't really want a Mégane. I do like the RS Clios but think it would be too small for me.

Actually, I was just looking at those last night. Looks like a good one goes for £7000 and up, a fair bit more than a LCR 225.

Anyway, I've got a 225, I love it, it's my first "performance" car but as a massive car nerd I did plenty of research first. It's perhaps not the most "feedback"-generous car in terms of steering, but the immense grip and lack of roll from the chassis will sling you through corners at impressive speeds. The traction is impressive as long as you feed the power in, if you stamp on the pedal right as the boost comes on you will see your traction light flickering, but what do you expect with (up to) 265bhp going through the front wheels!

What I wanted from a car was a FWD hot hatch (for insurance reasons, being 22!), and I was looking at a Clio 182. I did like that car, and was set on buying one, until I decided to up my budget. I had a go in an EP3 CTR and while I enjoyed it, it didn't make me grin like a loon like turbo cars do, which was when I booked myself a test drive in a LCR 225. The rest is history!

It's been a great car to live with so far, in the few months I've had it. MPG averaging 32.5 (best I've seen on my mixed route commute is 35.4) which is bang on / above manufacturers official figures. Driving with more enthusiam sees 30mpg.

Mine does not have Recaros but has the comfiest seats I've ever had the pleasure of sitting in (with the Recaros in an EP3 CTR a close second) and with them not being leather, you stick right into them in the corners. The climatronic system is excellent, the red lights on the dash make the car a glorious place to be at night and the ride as mention earlier is firm, but the car feels incredibly solid so it's not jarring or rattling over bumps.

If I had a complaint, it's that the sound deadening is heavy. Winding the windows down cures this, but it can get a bit cold late at night - I still do it if I'm driving for fun though! My car has a Milltek LCR exhaust and it sounds absolutely fantastic. It gives lovely pops and thumps on overruns and gear shifts and has a great burble. They aren't cheap but then neither are the competitor products, the other one you see on a lot of LCRs is a Blueflame exhaust, imo not as nice looking and definitely not as good a sound. It really goes well with the look, the LCR is a very aggressive looking car

Overall, if I could sum this car up in 3 words, they would be fast, comfortable and competent. It's got Audi DNA for sure, in that it feels very solid and almost refined (!) when cruising along, but it has a real devil under the bonnet! It's a real "do it all" super hatch, blistering pace, not that bad on fuel and comfortable - and the boot is huge!

Why would a 200Sx be worse on fuel than a Leon R ?
Its an older bigger engine car, I’ve achieved 40MPG in my stage 1 Leon Cupra R . I very much doubt you'd achieve that with a 90's turbo jap coupe (MPG really wasn’t a priority back then).

And an M3 would be far better IME.

I'd also suggest that an E36 M3 Evo is likely to cost less to run - no turbo and less electronics to go wrong.
You're kidding me right??? Are you seriously suggesting that a M3 is cheaper to run than a Cupra R?

Good E36 M3's are hard to come by nowadays, I know friends who have search for 6 months before finding a decent one. They're cheap to buy these days and as a result most have been owned by people who haven’t maintained them properly. If they're not maintained properly they will cost you lots of money.

I have several friends who have or currently own E36 M3's as well as a friend who works at BMW, I’ve had many long chats with them about buying an E36, and it always came down to whether or not you can afford the running costs and potential big bills.

The E36 engine is crammed pack full of technology, even by today’s standards, but if things go wrong with them it can get VERY expensive, very quickly. To maintain a M3 "properly" you need to have disposable money.

I'm a massive fan of the E36 M3, i intend to own one at some point... but they're not cheap cars to run. The Cupra R is considerable cheaper to run, the M3 is a much better car, but this is reflected in the maintenance cost. And let’s not forget the cost of M3 insurance.
It's 200cc and probably a lighter car.

I average 25mpg in my 1.8 Cupra as I did in my 2.2 Prelude Vtec and BMW 328 you must drive like Miss Daisy if you are getting anything like 40.

Exactly what "technology" is crammed into the E36 engine bay ?

I've always had a blanket policy (I tend to run at least 5 cars at a time) so individual insurance cost has never mattered to me.
