Hi Everyone,

I went to go and see a Clio 182 last weekend. The used car dealer selling it had a 'mycarcheck.com' data check report print out which was dated as being done recently, stating that all was clear. I paid a 250 pound deposit and will pick the car up when he returns from holiday on May 9th. In this week of anticipation curiosity got the better of me and I thought I'd do my own HPI check (through HPI themselves).

All was clear apart from 'VRM currently recorded as having outstanding finance', dated '18/12/2006'. Car has had 2 previous owners (first registered May 2005).

Also claimed a mileage discrepancy as follows: (I'm assuming a mis-type, and should read 17,000, not 217,000 in the space of a year and a half..!?).

27-Dec-2006 DVLA 217,000 217,000
23-Apr-2008 NMR 34,000 34,000
01-May-2008 DVLA 35,000 35,000

I'm going to ring the number of the finance company supplied by the HPI check tomorrow morning to see, but it seems very odd that it would still have outstanding finance from 2006!? Also odd that the check he'd done through mycarcheck.com came back clear...? (for the record the dealer is a registered business and operates from his house, which I went to in order to view the car, so a quick escape with my deposit may be difficult...he also has 15 or so other cars up for sale, stored in a lock up where he keeps the cars. Also seemed genuine enough in person, but who can really tell these days!?)

Any words of wisdom on HPI checks and accuracy appreciated, and apologies if this in the wrong section! I know the final answer will come from the finance company, but hoped for some words of experience from the pH crowd to sort my mind out this evening (also where do I stand on my deposit if it turns out to have outstanding finance?).

Yes, i've jus checked and mycarcheck.com don't do finance information...what a numpty if he didn't do a HPI/Experian check, especially as a trade seller! Hoping the information is out of date and RCI (the finance company) just need to clear it with HPI or something...

Obviously the seller didn't know about it if he (stupidly) chose to do a cheaper check, so if there is finance i'm hoping that i can get my deposit back easily enough and learn to only trust HPI! (Paid deposit on my debit card so should be easier).

Many cars are still showing on HPi as finance owing when they have been cleared years ago.

POORCARDEALER, thanks. Another trader I know has said the same as you, and I'm hoping this is the case.

Apparently the guy traded in for a Megane 225, so it seems unlikely he had outstanding finance on the Clio from 4/5 years previous? (2 owners, assuming first for year and a bit was Renault themselves, then sold to the first proper customer using Renault finance - this chain of events seems to make sense).

Ring the finance company in the morning, ask them to send you a fax or email confirming they have no interest in it.

Thanks everyone!

Yep, first plan of action was to ring finance company and take it from there....

If, however, it DOES have finance outstanding (worst case scenario!) where do I stand with my deposit? He posted me an order form for the car stating remaining balance etc., but as I gave the deposit over the phone, I haven't actually signed my part, it just says 'over phone' on it. Also, surely the fact it has finance on it should cancel any deposit/agreement anyway as it isn't his to sell, and at the time I hadn't performed my HPI check? Also, on checking, his website states 'all our cars are checked with HPI' and the check he showed me clearly wasn't!

Think you'd be fairly safe getting your deposit back if it does turn out to have finance owing as seller cannot claim title to the car.

Even if all legit however this really highlights the need to get you own decent HPI check, and never rely on a check provided by anyone with an interest in the sale of a car. Should you not you would have no protection with a 3rd party check as you have no contract with the HPI company. Read a story of a chap getting badly burned with an M3 in this way iirc.

Agreed. I've got complacent as all the cars I've ever bought have had a HPI check, and got caught out by a dealer claiming HPI checks but actually sneakily using a lesser check. My fault for assuming. Fortunately it dawned on me before I handed over a large sum of money and the keys to my HPI clear car! It's definitely a lesson, as I'm sure things like this happen all the time, and the problem on the HPI check is a real one! I blame all of these myregcartextcheckspotter.com companies giving people a false sense of security (and in this case giving the seller a good piece of mis-information).

Today's lesson: do your own HPI check before parting with any monies!

Thanks all, hope it gets cleared up without issue tomorrow!

I had a HPI check done on a bike I bought at the weekend at a local bike shop, he only charged me a tenner and I was well happy even though I know it costs them a lot less!
