Got nipper number three on the way so need to get myself an estate. I only drive old smokers as i do alot of mileage and don't see the point in buying a tidy motor just to make it worthless by racking the mileage up.

Currently got a 1996 Audi A4 Tdi saloon with 185k on the dials, and basically want to get the same but in Avant stylee!

Now, i've spotted a tidy looking one in budget, but its got 262k on the clocks! yikes

Its got as near as dammit a FSH, its clean and tidy, owner seems genuine, and the price reflects the mileage. We all know generally the VAG Tdi's are good for high mileage, but is 262k too high or does it not matter as long as its been cared for?

Modern day cars don't reallyyyy get affected that much by high mileage. But there is high as in 100k plus then there is insane. And that falls into the insane section. I wouldn't but it's up to you.

If its only a few hundred quid then I don't see why not. Just make sure there's no smoke when you turn it over, drive it etc, and check for unusual tyre wear.

You should be prepared, however, to accept that the seller may "want shut" because it has something expensive that needs fixing.

Its on Fleabay - I have done ALOT of research into these A4 Avants, and reckon it should go for about £400. Forgot to say its a 1997, and its got 11 months MOT on it.. So even if i drive it for a year and then throw it away, surely worth a punt?

Some of my old school mates are taxi drivers.
One of them recently sold his very tidy A6 2.0TDi with over 300k miles on the clock.

It was 2 1/2 years old!

The new owner's another taxi driver, and it's his work car!

If you're interested in that car, I'd get it thoroughly checked out.
Of course, if the invoices are there to go with the service book, you know exactly what's been done and what needs to be done again in the (not too distant?) future.

Depends how well it's been maintained. A car is only a set of components after all.

Am I wrong but at 300,000 over 2 1/2 years means he did on average roughly 328 miles A DAY?

Edit did he have it from new?.

Entirely feasible in a back-to-back airport hack non?

£400 for a one year disposable car is worth it.

However, as I'm sure you've realised, the fact that it has an MOT with 11 months left doesn't mean it will run for 11 months...

Well for £400 and keep it for a year, it could well be worth a punt then.

If it's any use I to have run quite a few cars which people would describe as having insane miles on the clock and to be honest they have been more reliable than cars with ridiculously low milages - a sign a car has spent more time sat still than mobile and my view is cars NEED to be driven.

I strongly believe that far too many people are still in the mindset that cars will only last 10 years 100,000 miles which may have been the case up to the 70s/80s but in reality cars from the last 10 years ought to do half a million miles if looked after.

ETA: AS DIRECTLY ABOVE thumbup

Whats the problem?
- it's £400 so wouldn't bother me in the slightest if it ran and drove well.
At least it's not likely to have been clocked AND has almost FSH.

Worst case scenario, engine blows up = Sell a few desireable bits off on eBay then scrap the rest and you'll still be quids in.

Mileage IS just a number so take advantage of "other peoples" old fashioned mind sets and grab a bargain.

Indeed, but it is a nice to have. I haven't actually viewed the FSH, but as long as it includes Cam belt etc that are within service tolerances I'll be reasonably happy!

I had a '98 saloon, 1.9TDi. It was one of the best cars I've ever owned.

Check to see if the front suspension creaks, that can be an expensive repair, it tends to do it when hot and dry (a careful seller will spray the joints with oil to avoid it). The rubber trims will be falling off the bottom of the doors, don't worry they're cheap and easy to replace. The dash digital display, if it has one, will probably have faded away.

Other than those things, and a failed MAF, I had no real problems on mine.

My neighbour has a 96/97 1.9TDi A4 Avant for sale with a a mere 194k miles on it, he's owned it for about 8 years. Tidy car, if you're interested PM me and I'll put you in touch. The car is near Welshpool.

The VAG 1.9TDi is good for the mileage assuming it's been looked after well enough. Price seems right so, assuming it doesn't rattle and clank (more than the usual TDi clatter) or smoke go for it. Parts and replacement engines are easy to source if it comes to it but at £400 you should be fine.

there's £200 scrap in that, so at £400, it's gotta be worth a punt, and the fact that he is being up front about the mileage and hasn't clocked it to get more money is a good sign in my book
