I have just acquired a Gen 2 RS and am keen to take it on some UK track days. Does anyone know what the standard exhaust noise levels are for noise testing purposes? I usually go to Bedford and from memory they test on both a static basis and on a drive by basis on a faster part of the circuit.

Chaps at JZM suggested I might struggle on anything but the loud days that certain circuits sometimes run, but would welcome views from owners or former owners who have taken their cars on UK circuits.

First impressions of the car are very good indeed especially steering feel, throttle response and traction, but Cup Sports and waterlogged roads can be a scary combination! Have had winter tyres fitted today so am hoping to use for the remainder of winter months. The wheels are not the easiest to change but the guys at Southam tyres did a brilliant job and took real care.

Cheers

They vary from 102 to 105 in standard form at 3/4 rpm, but get louder with age. Most of the gents I know also carry decibel. Devils as back up.

^ what Cunno said. 105db days only. No chance on a 98db day unless a mate has hired a 98db circuit and a blind eye or deaf ear is being turned...which never happens of course biggrin

And...pics pls!

105 static is about where they are.

My advice would be to make sure (certain) your tyre fitter has encyclopedic knowledge of attaching CL wheels.

Listen to Dan with regards to letting anyone do the wheels - anyone refitting them should be familiar with the procedure in the most recent technical bulletin (torque, break back a little bit and re-torque. should be 600Nm +- 5% {which is the typical tolerance of the wrench}).

In noise terms - the decibel devils are becoming a must have and you won't be able to drive somewhere like Donington without them (or some other mod to reduce the noise - even tough you will still make less noise than the planes flying overhead). I should really get a set myself for my 3.8 CS...

Has anyone used a Decibel Devil or similar and had it help on a 997 GT3/RS? In my experience most of the noise on a static test comes from the engine anyway, so the exhaust mods do little to help.

My GT3 (non RS) is 104-105 db on a static test and the little exhaust valve trick makes less than 1db difference :-(

Still looking for an effective solution...

Yes but the car has an RSS x pipe. Adding the DD's took 5db off and it measured at ~105 with them on. I am not sure how well they will fit the std tailpipes, i think the DD's need a mod for that but they are pretty good fit on the RSS.

Hi you can plug the exhaust valve to keep all three silencers operational for the static test. It costs 10p and takes 5 seconds. That, plus dipping the clutch and switching off the aircon, meant my 7.2 RS registered 100.8 and 100.9 DB on two consecutive track days. It also got my 7.1 GT3 through.
