996 C2 - exhaust replacement?
Discussion
My other half has a 2003 996 C2, and both rear silencer boxes were pulled up on the last MOT as being rusty. It passed the MOT but they'll need replacing soon, so I'm after some recommendations from your collective wisdom
We've so far been quoted OEM replacements from Northway Porsche at around £900 a pair (not sure if this included VAT, suspect not). I've not yet looked into aftermarket systems, but in all honesty we don't want the car much louder than it came out of the factory (it sounds lovely as is IMO). Aside from second-hand units from fleabay is there anything else worth considering? We'll pay for OEM if we have to, but if we can save a few £ elsewhere then it's worth considering.

I don't know if Dansk made the OEM exhaust for the 996, but they certainly were the provider of earlier models.
That stainless sports box above is going to be louder than stock (but it sounds great!) - you can also get a Dansk stainless system that's supposed to be otherwise identical to the mild steel originals. Annoyingly, perhaps, the non-sports back boxes cost more than the sports equivalent.

Mine were flagged up as rusty at a service, ran it for another couple of years without changing them, then put it up for sale and it went through a PPI without any issues, so you might not need to rush to replace them!
They've been flagged as rusty for the last two years and scraped through, I've had a look at them as they are now and they really do need replacing IknowJoseph said:

Good to know, thanks. I agree it's frustrating that the OEM replacements are more expensive! I think I need to do a bit of youtubing to work out noise levels. There's one near me that has some sort of sports system and it sounds awful - just plain loud with no attempt at 'accoustics.' Has anyone here had experience of the Dansk or Design911 units?
I was quoted at the end of last year:
Dansk Sports silencers £556.00 + VAT
Dansk Standard silencers £755.00 + VAT
Porsche standard silencers £822.00 + VAT
Fitting (including labour & kit) was around £400 + VAT
I'm happy with the sports silencers; they're not loud at all in town or on the commute, but they sound fantastic when you get the revs up. You're welcome to come have a listen if you're ever around Oxford.

RPM Technik are also offering 25% of fitting if you buy Milltek bits from them at the moment. Guess it's still going to work out more expensive than the Dansk back boxes, but I'd be tempted if I was looking for a sportier exhaust now (and I know that you're not looking to go sportier, just less rusty!)
I'm in the same position. Northway told me a couple of days ago that my rear boxes need replacing and said Dansk do 3 models.
The most expensive is OEM non-sports sound.
Then there's a 'mild' (sound volume, not steel) sports exhaust that will see you below trackday noise limits but is on back-order till June.
Finally a properly loud supersports model that's too loud for trackdays.
The DesignTek exhaust on Design911 is tempting at the price. Anyone here have any experience of it? Is it too loud for trackday use?

Made from OEM silencers and slightly louder than OEM, but not by a vast amount, they sound great on my mate's 996. €500 all in inc delivery.
I have Carnewal exchange ones on my 993 and they're also great.

I think those Carnewal ones require your exchange items to be in serviceable condition. They also sell modified new OEM items but these are €1425 rather than the €495 used exchange ones.
A fellow PHer had the same problem with non exchangable boxes though Gert at Carnewal looked after him with a pair of used boxes & they sound quite like an air cooled 911. You will need to budget for all new clamps as they will undoubtedly be trashed as the bolts may need cutting off due to corrosion. DRH986 said:

AIUI Gert will basically assess the condition of the exchange exhausts, if they require more work etc then he'll basically refund you less for them. The total cost is the net cost I.e. With my 993 mufflers, I paid €800, he posted the modified ones, then when he received my ones and saw they were okay, he refunded me €400. My friend with the 996 had about an agreed €100 knocked off his "refund" as his needed extra work at Gerts end for him to refurb, modify and sell on.Zoin said:

I have the DT set on my C2 and they are about the same sound as OEM - they don't drone like some of the more 'sporty' stainless systems - but they are stainless so you wont need to change them for a good few years. The most expensive is OEM non-sports sound.

I have just fitted the Dansk sports exhaust to my C4S. It was the middle "sports" option. the noise is good. Slightly loudler than the oem system but not boomy or droning whatsoever. I would describe it as slightly deeper and throatier than the oem unit I had on my car.
Just a tip on fitting, it was an absolute nightmare. The fixing bolts (one long and one shorter) were all rusted. Once you have taken the bumper and heatshields off, it's easier to take the bracket off the car with the exhaust attached so you can work on the two bolts whilst the units are off the car. I found the longer bolt easier to release, but the slightly shorter bolt was a nightmare. They both slot into a metal sleeve with brillo pad style bushes on either side. The shorter bolts had rusted inside the sleeves so needed heating with a torch before being "persuading" out with a cold chisel.
I also used the fitting kit from ECP but the nuts on there are of poor quality and one of them stripped the thread on the bolts.
It took three of us four hours to fit the exhaust. That was in a fully equipped garage with the car sat on a two post lift. Personally, I'd get someone to fit it if I were you.

Thanks for the info Smiler1. Looks like that might be the way to go then. I'm on the motorway fairly often so lack of drone/boom is definitely desirable.Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
