There seem to have been lots of posts about the 996 Turbo recently; how great it is, how fast it is, what good value it is, how reliable the motor is etc etc - it goes on.
What's happened? They seem to have got popular/fashionable!
Wasn't so long ago, that they were ugly, bit kettles.

How times change perception.

Its dropped into a price bracket where owners appreciate the car more.

Epic car for the money. Id buy another one in a heart beat!

I was at the Ace Cafe last night for the monthly R20 meet, and there were 2 997T's, 1 996 GT2, and 7 996T's (1 being an S). Seems to be pretty popular then.

As a used buy 6t has no equal. Better steering and more predictable 4wd system than 7t. Also more tuneable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBi1AMW9KPg

I wouldnt call a 996T "fashionable" - it is still one of the ugliest Porsches ever made and is a bit of a brute.

Nonetheless, a 996T is an extraordinary car for the money! The performance is ridiculous for the price, as is the handling, etc.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

The 996 turbo certainly has presence, if not natural beauty and I think 996's in general have got better with age.

Some cars for sale might be slightly, dare I say it, overpriced?. I know when I was looking 5 years ago, a lot of cars needed money spending on them and that was when quite a few still had porsche warranties on them. Best bet is a car that has been enthusiast owned, but there are only so many of those.

Why the comments on steering and 4wd?

I have been looking for a 996tt for a while but in the end I found the extra £10k for a 997tt, both great cars but for me the premium was worth it for better exterior looks (lights and front grilles really), way better interior and +50bhp

More feel and feedback in steering. the 997 has a vario rack which is not as precise. The 4wd system in the 996 is more predictable and rwd most of the time. In the 997 t the 4wd switches from understeer to oversteer through a single corner which can be disconcerting and makes it pretty horrible through corners occasionally especially on track. On road doesn't really make difference as you're never near the cornering limits of the car so won't notice it.

Power can be upped to a reliable 650 bhp on both cars but easier to extract that sort of power from a 996 as DME sensor not as knock sensitive as 997. 997 starts pulling back power as soon as it notices engine not within preset parameters hence can be very difficult to tune unless work carried out by a proper tuning house.

I've been reading posts like that for the last 3 years. Someone wants to buy an NA 996 and they get told to buy the turbo instead.

Well i'm on my 3rd 6T only this one is slightly breathed on via DMS 550bhp.
To be honest for usability and practicality and out and out pace best 911's i've owned bar none, kind of gives you a clue to how much i like them being on my 3rd!!

Quickest Porsche i've owned

Only bloody downside is the window regulator has just pack in!!

Interesting thanks. I don't intend to track or tune (maybe an exhaust) so for me the 997 was the right choice.

Both great cars using the famed Mezger engine.

I had it custom made in matt black by someone I know who makes decals.

Not expensive. Very easy to fit.
