996 ignition switch grief

I hope someone can help with the following:
My '02 996 was suffering from the fairly common ignition switch failure where the key is hard to turn and there are random elecrical gremlins. So I replaced the switch. Now I get "ignition key not removed" when I open the door (though I have removed the key) and also the battery went flat in a day.
Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that the new switch is faulty. It's a non branded one. Maybe tomorrow I'll go to the local VW garage and get a 'genuine' one.
