This is the bit I don't get.
A Mk 1 Clubsport is right up there with the 996 GT3RS in terms of desirability/rarity (though not price, currently). A Speed Yellow example with Mk2 brakes and a Manthey K400 conversion is close to the holy grail of Mk1 996 GT3's.

I mean come on, the only way you're going to top that noise is to put something like an unfettered 997 Cup engine into a Mk1 chassis

A £16k difference? To me it's virtually the same car. Imagine how badass that mk2 would be with 16 grand's worth of mods.
True, and there's no doubting a Mk2 fettled to the tune of £16k would be absolutely superb, but the later car will always be as ugly as sin when compared with the "original" Harris_I said:

It's not though, add up the cost of the buckets and Manthey upgrades and I'd wager there's far more than a £16k price difference. Plus it's a proper colour Sorry, but this all sounds like the speculator nonsense fuelled by originality fetishists. [ETA: posted without having seen cmoose's post.]
A clubsport is nothing more than a flimsy cage (it adds less than you'd think to rigidity), bucket seats, harnesses and fire extinguisher. Not worth 16 grand. A lot of so-called "comfort" cars already have some combo of these.
A good mark 1 and mark 2 drive alike with similar set up and tyres. There's a miniscule amount more shove in the engine and brakes on the mk2. Some people like the looks of the mk1 more.
When markets are frothy, these tiny differences get blown out of proportion.

Perceived unicorn cars ? There were 28 UK Mk1 Clubsports, IIRC, that makes them rarer than the fabled 996 GT3 RS. The Mk2 shell is indeed stiffer :
Body 911 Carrera/911 Carrera 4
Bodyshell
Extensive reinforcement measures in sill, roof frame and seat pan area increase the flexural and
torsional strength by a further 25% on coupes and by 10% on convertibles.
Apart from the wings, which have been adopted from the 911 Turbo, the bodyshell has been
modified in various areas for model update purposes.
The B-post has been modified to take the new belt tensioner and belt-force limiter. In the tunnel
and seat pan area, an additional tube with side support has been fitted for lateral reinforcement.
The tunnel area has been modified to take the new (Tiptronic S) transmission. The position of the
transmission mounting on the body now corresponds to the 911 Turbo.
A reinforcement tube has also been fitted in the side of the roof frame.

Not sure it has anything to do with the market's frothiness.A clubsport is nothing more than a flimsy cage (it adds less than you'd think to rigidity), bucket seats, harnesses and fire extinguisher. Not worth 16 grand. A lot of so-called "comfort" cars already have some combo of these.

The Mk2 was supplied to the ROW, the Mk1 wasn't. Not sure what the total production numbers are of the two iterations, but I've no doubt a bearded, sandal wearing individual will be along soon to clarify ...
Mk1 CS cage is the same as that fitted to the Mk2. Fitment of the rear section does improve the shell stiffness (probably moreso on the more flexible Mk1 shell)
Mk1 got a lightweight single mass flywheel and the door airbags deleted too.
No question for me that the yellow car would be the one to choose, but £78,000 is a lot of money to pay a private individual.
It's obviously the same amount of money to pay a business, so my phrasing needs work - but what I mean is that with a dealer you have some protections, and potentially the advantage of finance (should one wish to go that route).
With that aside, I'd love to raise the garage door on the CS.

I've been thinking about buying 996 GT3 for a while, Considering some of the very highly specced GT3 mk2 out there (Carbon seats, cage etc) for nearly £17k less does make the yellow CS, dare i say feel overpriced. For the difference you could probably get the manthey kit fitted to the Gt3 mk2 but for the purist it will never be a CS. I have to say i absolutely love the yellow CS.

Oh cut it out mr cross-eyed It just comes down to affordability and the financial merits of a purchase. The yellow 996.1 CS mentioned earlier has some quality upgrades. The 996.2 is a decent spec (buckets etc) and if required for track use, could do with some upgrades. Colour is personal and I agree a bright colour more attractive.
For someone who cannot afford the more expensive car, the cheaper one would be super. For someone who can afford both and looking for a future 'bet', the 996.1 CS in yellow is indeed a rarer find. However to someone who just wants to drive and doesn't buy into the values debate too much, the cheaper car will do.
Of course, one can always take a brighter coloured 996.2 GT3 CS and do additional mods - single mass flywheel, motorsport diff, racing suspension, uprated brakes, etc to create a real nirvana of a car - which is what drives me potty every time

Great things Mk 1's and plenty quick enough with some fettling:

The Mk1. The original and THE best. The end. P.S You're a very naughty boy JC
cmoose has a point, although I’d say the comparison isn’t with the .2 that’s mentioned but the red mk1 that’s up for sale at £55k or whatever at the moment.
The Mathey conversion is indeed very nice to have but it’s hardly rare and hasn’t made any premium thus far from what I remember?
So is the SY one worth £20k more than the GR car? I doubt it.
I think I’d rather have a choice modded .2 like LaSource’s personally.
