EBay cannot be the best platform for selling such a thing.

Try a "cooking" 996.2 GT3. Barely any difference in how they feel/drive compared with the 996 'RS, (unlike the 997 and 991 generations of GT3 vs GT3 RS by comparison).
I would say the opposite on that one - but you can modify a 6GT3 to feel very similar.

Can you explain more Steve? Do you mean in terms of set up? Maybe I should have been more explicit - I was meaning from a "hardware" perspective.

Plus AFAIK on the 997.1 platform, there was not too much actual difference between GT3 and GT3 RS, bar the wide rear arches.

It was on the 997.2 where the goalposts really began to shift between the two.

Front upright is the one fitted to the 997.1 (double clamp to the strut, different Ackerman geometry), so significantly different to the "cooking" 996.2 GT3 with the single clamp. Rear suspension also different but hazy on exactly what. Engine intake different & power output 400bhp+ as a result. The factory never bothered to update the specs so they are still listed as 381bhp.

Good point. AP went out of his way to highlight this on the recent 992 GT3 launch in Porsche's 'secret GT shed'.

The 996 GT3 RS engine used the smaller (12mm) spark plugs (that were subsequently used on the heads fitted to the 997 GT3) Some say the 996 GT3 RS heads are actually the heads developed for the Gen 1 997 GT3 ...

The Porsche gt car market sadly changed a number of years ago.

Sadly 996 gt3rs has always been the one that got away from
me and one I would love to own and enjoy. I missed my opportunity around late 2009 and not long after the speculators changed the market.

One day maybe.
I had one when they were still £65K. I didn't gel with it at all (in fact I actively disliked it)
I need to revisit one someday, and if their prices continue softening, that may well happen ...

A bit like AP. I'd go for blue decals next time around, and a decent exhaust, and some Ohlins ...

When was that, about ten years ago?

£65k in 2008 is about £87k in real terms today....so they haven't flown in value eh.....

Yep, 9 years ago.
It had under 7K miles on it when I sold it, and had belonged to Keith Flint of The Prodigy. So at the peak would've been worth £125K minimum (and probably more) ?

The Firestarter (RIP) and band mate Liam were both huge petrolheads, so I doubt it was a lack of running in that affected this particular car.

No doubting, it was a peach of car, but less than 5,500 miles in 5 years ...

With hindsight it needed :

New tyres (knowing what I know now, Cups or Cup 2's rather than PS2's)

Cup toe links on the rear.

Ride heights, rake and corner weights set accurately.

Toe and camber settings optimized.

OE dampers overhauled or better still fitment of a set of KW V3's.

Diff rebuilt with Cup internals or a Guard diff.

Manthey K410 exhaust (basically the M & M system used on the Mk1 K400 conversions)

Wheels, decals etc in blue rather than red, or better still ...

or ...

I think you are both right in different ways. The standard 6GT3 and the RS do feel quite different, but the hardware is essentially the same. So if the only thing that matters is the driving experience and not values, start with a comfort .2 and add a bit of spice to your taste.

I get the impression today's Porsche community doesn't really do modding anymore - I suppose the hardware is too complex and the customer profile has changed. But it was a big part of the charm for me 10-20 years ago.

Interestingly I had an 03 as well same price, that I commuted in, Epsom to Woking. I absolutely loved it. I described it at the time on here as intoxicating! Then my work changed and I was home based so didn't drive it from one week to the next. When I did drive it, it felt all wrong, just not nice. I have no idea how that worked and why it should feel like that.

You need time in a 6RS. It feeds you a lot of information and when you are tuned into one they are sublime. It tells you everything that’s going on and you modify your inputs around what is relevant. If you don’t spend much time in the car - or more time in another sports car - they can feel a bit intimidating.

Basically they have the feel of a race car and race cars are lively by nature when they are set up there or there about a their response to inputs is sublime and entirely predictable. That’s why I love them so much. You don’t need a 6RS to be set up perfectly to be a good car - but some of the set ups of cars that I drove were miles away from where they should have been. Also, they like to be set up low. If not the homologated suspension hardware doesn’t add any benefit

Mine gets driven hard normally, unfortunately I’m away for 6 months, can’t wait to get back behind the wheel in the spring!
