Had a bit of a bad experience with "sports and prestige Slough" today.
Here is the car http://m.sportsandprestigeslough.co.uk/used-car-po...
It's a 2008 black 997 C2S with aero kit, alcantara steering wheel and gear knob so should be pretty unique if anyone has experience of it.

On paper it was the perfect car for me, good price, spec and colour. But the dealer very rudely put the phone down on me after I asked a few questions. I smell a rat here and wonder if the car has a shady history.

Cheers
Rob

What questions did you ask?

This is the list of questions I had when I phoned. Before we started I said I was a buyer with funds available and ready to go. He was near London and I'm in Yorkshire so need to know all details before I commit to a drive down.

Number of owners
When did last owner buy it
Is aero kit factory fitted
Date, location and mileage of every service
Marks/dents/scratches on bodywork/wheels/interior
Do they have any history of engine work for either IMS failure or Bore scoring?
Do they check for over-revs when they get a car in?
Could I arrange for an independent review of the car subject to a deposit being paid?

And finally,

How long have you had the car?

Now the guy was being a bit shirty with all the questions but when I asked how long he'd had the car he said "3 days". I said I've been watching the car on autotrader for a month and that they've recently changed price from £36k to 34k. He said that was a different car, to which I replied it wasn't. He then said "clearly you know what you are looking for and this car isn't for you" and hung up!!!!

Yes he did, other than the question about marks on bodywork as I hadn't actually got round to asking that.

He also said late (2007/8) gen 1 997s don't suffer from IMS/bore scoring issues. Is this correct? I know the earlier ones were more prone to it but didn't think it was completely eradicated until gen 2.

I expect they formed an opinion of you, just as you will have formed an opinion of them and the car. He took the view that you'd be a pain the arse customer.

The car looks lovely in the pictures. I don't think your questions were unreasonable in view of distance to travel to view. I think you are right about the bore score issues affecting all gen 1 carreras. IMS better from 2006 but it's bore scoring which is the main one with these. Sometimes dealers just dont like being asked detailed questions about there stock or how they buy them, they just think you should just roll up believe everything they tell you then give them your hard earned!!!

Thanks Jimmy P. I've viewed several cars in my local area (50 mile radius) and not needed to ask questions as they weren't too far away. But as Slough was a 6hr round trip I wanted a good idea of the car before I drove down. To be honest if he answered straight and the car was fine I would've paid a deposit over phone and collected it next week. I have my suspicions that the car is a lemon and he knew I would uncover it with the inspection so didn't want to waste either of our time.

Does anyone else have a problem with these type of dealers. There are so many of them working from home, taking cars to parks etc in the pictures. For me I would rather pay more and see a well established forecourt, ideally main agent or specialist.

Anything that says viewing by appointment only is ticked straight off my list.

They are on the A4. It's not a house.

Bit harsh.
They were all fair questions, and I'd be asking the same.

However, the truth is that the dealer will probably hoping to, and probably will, offload it onto someone who doesn't know about buying cars and will just have a drive, love the fact it's a Porsche and love the way it looks and buy it on that basis.

Hmmm, that's the problem right there. The dealer is full of st, you called him on his BS, and having been called (combined with the fact that you are apparently a demanding customer) decided to hang up.

The car might be great. But it probably isn't. The dealer might be okay. But probably isn't.

The car has Turbo wheels which look a bit pants to be honest.

Personally I would forget about it and move on. The car probably wasn't of the standard you were looking for (the dealer knew this) so go find another, better, one.

Whilst I agree with part of your post, I certainly wouldn't rule out all 'by appointment only dealers', for example 911 Virgin are by appointment only and they;ve got a pretty good reputation.
