Retro'ing a GT3
Discussion
I quite like the old 964 RS and would love a 964 body on a GT3 everything else but as i havent got the money to do it i just wondered, how would people retro a GT3?
Some people prefer to 'modernise' and mimic the GT2 RS interior in theirs (or something similar), but how would you do a retro?
Im thinking;
Duck tail
Multi-coloured seat cushions
Red fuel car
Black centres to wheels
But what else?

I drove a 964C2 at Silverstone on Sunday with a few basic mods and that was plenty fast enough.
The cost of this project would make it unviable. You can get 300BHP is from the original engine. Take out a bit of weight, RS Carpet set, door cards and some buckets. Interior done. Bigger brakes, adjustabl top mounts and some dampers.
You will end up with a lovely little car that will still have a decent value.

Hi Steve,
I hear what your saying but the cost to do it correctly is expensive isnt it plus id have to get a donor car. Whereas i have the '3 now but like the retro look.
And before people start talking about impact on future values etc, all mods are reversible and the car, at the moment, is a keeper

TBH - i'm not really sure this is something that works for the GT3 - whether 996/997 or 991.
The GT3 is one of those cars that people try to make their car like, whether aesthetically or mechanically.
I'm not sure of what you're after - you could try the Magnus Walker/Sharkwerks route... but I don't think that really adds anything and its just spending for spending sake...

Ok, i should say aesthetically and not mechanically
How would you aesthetically retro a modern (water cooled) to look like the GT2/RS's of olden days?
I would say the whole of the point of the 996 was that it was an unashamedly modern design and a clean break from the air-cooled cars. Retro aesthetics therefore wouldn't work (albeit that the 997 reverted to plain round headlamps!).How would you aesthetically retro a modern (water cooled) to look like the GT2/RS's of olden days?
If you wanted the pumped up guards of the 993 GT2, there's this from the 'decently modified cars' thread.... Just add rivets.

Interesting question and one which I have daydreamed about before I would love to put the body of a Singer on a 997 GT3 but.......... I don't think it would work
I think the windows and roofline don't match and the wheelbase is slightly longer so you would have to stretch the body somehow.
So this bodywork...
On this chassis.....

That link gets all the aftermarket bits to make a 997 look a bit sport classic.
I love the Sport Classic, and lottery win would be getting one, but I'm not sure id bdize a GT3 with those bits.
That being said the ducktail might look nice on a Carrea s or GTS even.

Think out in america theres someone doing the 964/gt3 but not sure what happened to it though think ive seen one in a mag as well.
There's a 1969 912 with 997 Cup running gear... http://www.carbuildindex.com/6342/1969-porsche-912...Have a look at the RPM Technik CSR lines for the 996/997. The ducktails etc would bolt on and be reversible.
Maybe have a look at this creation from Ruf, albeit with an electric motor rather than a flat 6 (Alois Ruf part-owns a hydro-electric power station).

I might be missing something here, but isnt what you actually want the reverse?
A 964 with a GT3 drive train etc?
Exactly - seems to be a bit of a waste of a full GT3 as not much of it would be used, you would be better just finding a GT3 engine and gearbox and a 964 with a blown engineA 964 with a GT3 drive train etc?

Eh? Isn't that the same?
Not really, you cant drop a 964 shell onto GT3 but you can put the GT3 engine and gearbox into a 964. Putting 964 body panels onto a GT3 is going to look more like a covin replica than a 964.V8KSN said:

The op seems to want to 'backdate' a GT3 which seems a bizarre thing to do, but hey we are all different I guess.

Its completely the opposite unless I am reading it wrong.

Like you say, probably better to just put the drivetrain into a 964
