Do it! I wouldn't go under 10k unless you're really lucky. I did my reading and was well aware of the engine issues so I went for an early 3.4 with the double row ims bearing and less prone to bore score.

C4S was in range when I was browsing but they have all gone up a couple grand in the last few months it seems.

Still, love my little C4, it does feel like quite a special car and I love the looks

btw I'm over 100k and zero issues.

Good point there, Skinnny, scoring...plus the fact that 3.4's are a good few grand cheaper

http://www.autofarm.co.uk/pdf/Total911_July06.pdf

So, I'm up to two inspections being refused due to sellers 'not being available' smile

Out of curiosity, have you had any dealers refuse a PPI, or are you just looking at private sales?

i was looking last weekend at early C2 3.4... there is a silver car about 70k miles for £9500 either on AT or PH, slight downside was the red/orange/browny interior. But that is cheap for a 70k mile car and it looked in good nick. I had a '99 C2 which i sold back end of last year, great cars, I think people are just catching onto the fact they are THE 911 bargain.

Would say manual 3.6 C2 if you can lots of upsides and u get a glovebox lol
the 3.6 is certainly a more modern car.

Personally, I preferred to go for the 3.4 for a few reasons such as:
- no traction control and no stability control. Less to go wrong and purer driving experience
- cable throttle
- cable doors and boot - sometimes an issue if your battery goes dead on a 3.6 onwards
- more cohesive design - although the world seems to hate the fried egg headlight.
- statistically more reliable. (again, this depends)

But to the O/P: DO it. I can't think of anything as good anywhere near their current price.

...is OP the convinced yet...? I am, although won't be buying without PPI - there are more fun ways to waste that kind of money.

I like this one, miles a little high but looks in good condition

Traction control/stability control was an option on 3.6 C2, and when I was looking for mine it was surprisingly rare. My 3.6 C2 does not have traction control or stability control.

It's 17 years old so the mileage is pretty low at 6-7,000 per year (they're better with regular use). It does look very nice indeed, a bonus that you probably haven't noticed is that it has Sound Pack too (denoted by speakers in the doors).

Get a boroscope inclusive PPI and get it bought!

I was looking at this one. Take a close look at the picture of the front wheel. There's corrosion on the sill and on the inner wheel arch. Might just be surface, but worth noting.

I don't understand the appeal; they look bloated and under-wheeled in my eyes. Combined with the interior and time bomb engine, it's hardly one under the radar - they're a bargain for a reason!

I'd check out a 987 Boxster or Cayman for similar money.

987 (unless it's Gen 2 - which would be much more money) is as likely - if not more likely - to grenade its engine. Also, speaking purely from a personal POV, I've had a Boxster, and while I thought it was great, I want a 911. And a 996 is the cheapest way into one.

There was a time when the 964 was considered 'ugly' too.

that is the point for me also - it's still a 911 at the end of the day. You can't tell stories to your grandkids about the good old days when you owned a Boxster. Well you can I guess.

Nice spot with the corrosion there...are you trying to put me off? smile

Miles are high relative to others offered for sale. If you take the average as a 12k a year daily driver, yes 110k is low for 17 years.

haha! Nope, not trying to put you off! I won't be in a position to buy until the summer, so I expect that all the cars currently listed will be gone by then. I've just spent a lot of time looking at all the adverts and noticed that rust while 'zooming in'.

I was thinking a better time to buy would be now or this winter, my reasoning being that sporty cars sell too well in the summer.

Almost certainly correct, but I'm moving house and the purchase cash is coming from the proceeds of my sale!

Well, FWIW, unless you have a strong pair of rose tinted glasses, you may well be underwhelmed. We're obviously different; i'm not wed to any car and judge each by its merits. There aren't many 911s i'd go out of my way to own.

You are right about the 964; it's certainly gone up in value. That has been driven by the knock on effect of it being difficult to find a nice 993 and the recent general love for buying older 911s recently (thanks for that, Singer and Magnus Walker). As a result, now a decent manual 964 is difficult too.

I'm aware that it's not going to be the last word in performance or handling. The looks actually appeal to me, as I think it now looks quite delicate when compared to a later 997 or the 991.

I could yet change my mind. My other options are an Elise 111r or maybe a Caterham. It's going to be a 'garage queen' whatever I buy, so I'm keeping my options open. But I think I want a 911 smile

Edited to add - I've just looked at your profile and it seems you own, or have owned, at least four 911s, so you can't hate them that much!
