For the Comforts, do I assume all cages, Tequipment or otherwise are aftermarket, ditto the buckets, and if so, why were so many ordered as Comforts when clearly the preference is to have the track enhancements (the CS being a no cost option)? Can someone enlighten me?

Mine has factory buckets, as I suspect most do.

I am having the cage and harnesses put in now ahead of a two day trip to Spa next month.

I imagine that the original owner / specifier had different aspirations &/or uses in mind compared to the subsequent owners. The genuine Clubsports have always attracted a slight premium in the secondhand market as a result of this & their relative rarity compared to the comforts.

Can I ask who is supplying your cage? And how much? I understand the Tech Equipment cages are no longer available

That makes sense. I bought a Comfort because I do mainly road miles and a bit of touring (the wife is happier in the Comfort). If this list is a semi-accurate snapshot of the Comfort/Clubsport what I don't quite get is the lean towards Comforts when the nature of the car has for as long as I have known about them always been mainly about track. The current premium for Clubsports suggests this. So, I wonder if the reason for all the Comforts is because there were a lot fewer track days opportunities in the early 2000's, and maybe the first buyers were all keeping the wives happy with an extra bit of 'comfort', something which later buyers have not needed to worry about, hence the conversions.

JZM are installing it. I believe they still get them direct from Porsche. Stainless steel cage (rear only) is £967+vat. All in the cage, 2 x Schroth harnesses & seat bars plus fitting and vat is c£2,400.

Lets just say that there has traditionally been a disconnect between the objectives of the first owners who specify the cars and the people who buy them used. This has been a recurring theme with all GT3s that continues to this day, but as a general point less than a quarter of people buying them new specify Clubsport but seemingly a convincing majority of used buyers want it. There is a possibility that this may change going forward though - spiralling values (with corresponding increases in track day insurance and excess costs) are starting to drive all GT3s into track day retirement and this will erode the need of buyers for a clubsport. However, what it will not do is affect rarity : Clubsports are all rarer cars than corresponding RS models for all generations of GT3s... wink

When new, a comfort with buckets and cage was a more expensive spec than a clubsport. The comfort with buckets also gave you leather bucket seats instead of nomex.
I am sure the differences between a clubsport cage and a tequiment cage was probably not too clearly described by the salesman. Therefore, at the time, buyers with comfort plus buckets plus cage were going for the more expensive route to a better specced trackable car....


...as Disco says, the second hand market has had other ideas...

I'd wager most of the tequipment cages were fitted after they were bought, and probably not by the first owners.

I think the mindset was that the first owners wanted the flexibility of shoving stuff in the cavernous back, and having the luxury of leather with the sportiness of the leather buckets option. A Jekyll and Hyde car - not bought by hardcore track day boys. Now they're increasingly being bought by full on enthusiasts who want to use them on track and need harnesses/cages to fully exploit the car. The move to flappy paddle/turbo/computerised everything has reawakened enthusiasts desire to own such pure track cars.

There wasn't a price differential between CS/comfort a few years ago before the market took off, and certainly not when I bought my comfort 6 years ago. But with the new type of hardcore buyers, the CS has become more desirable, and of course rarity now also plays an important part.

Yes, there is some of that too. I recently met a bunch of 997.2 RS trackers who are one feeling uncomfortable tracking their higher value car and also looking for the cheaper 996 option.

FYI, my first 996 gt3 was a comfort with buckets and cage. Fully specced that way from factory (I had Porsche print off the original spec list)
