My first Porsche collected on Saturday - WOW

As the title suggests I picked up my first Porsche on Saturday from RPM in Knaresborough. I bought a 997.1 C2S manual in Basalt Black. I love it, as simple as that! Prior to collecting it the guys at RPM carried out a major service, fitted new rear discs and pads, new brake pipes and new front coolant hoses, coil packs and a few other bits and bobs.
I had originally said that it had to be a 997.2 PDK but the OH stated that if I spent that much money she'd remove my testicles. I knew I couldn't have a tip gen.1 as the 'box would get on my nerves after coming out of two auto ZF 8 speeders so manual it had to be. I don't mind though, I'm actually enjoying it more than I though I would although I've stalled it a few times.
I need to take some decent picture but the weather is stopping me doing that so here's one from the advert:

It has the Sports Chrono Plus package. Does the Plus bit just mean that the PSE is integrated in with the sport button instead of having the separate button? I drive it with sport on anyhow as the sound is fantastic although I do switch the PASM back to normal as I like my teeth the way they are!

I can't compare it to a non S spec car as I haven't driven one. It does feel fast but I had a 450+hp RS6 at the beginning of the year and compared to that it isn't quick, however it is a damn sight nicer to drive and is understandably miles better at the handling/road holding side of things. Against the E46 M3's I've had it's faster, I'm sure, but I just need to learn how to drive it now as the front end feel is totally different to anything I've had and the whole RR layout compared to FR is something else I need to get my head around.Does it feel quick ...

Ended up selling it up too soon, part of the reason was a very heavy clutch. Little did I know that it was just b/c it was on its way out.. Which a subsequent drive of the 997.2 GTS confirmed. So don't make the same mistake :-)
Lovely machine, lovely steering and lovely sound. Especially with a decent exhaust, better than the 997.2 for sure. And not as artificial as the 991.
Keep a close eye on that engine though but driven properly and serviced regularly should be ok I guess...

Bought my first 911 Porsche in May,drove it down from Leeds to the south kent coast in torrential rain.Felt quite smug till I went over 60mph and the vibration from the front was terrible but I new it was wheel balance problems.
Once I got it on the M20 it was nice and empty so flicked it into sport and put me foot down (oogh arrrr) So blooming linear ,and what a rush.

The thing I love about the 911 is what others have said, it's just so useable whilst being properly good at what it's supposed to be - a drivers car. I've got a 3 year old daughter and she fits in the back no problem, plenty of leg room and she can see out of the windows with ease, she loves it but for some reason calls it a bus? Maybe it's the RR layout that she's sussed out is common between the two

Totally agree. Mine is a week and a bit "old" now and despite putting my back out I took it to Ikea today. A bit of a blat on A roads and a bit of motorway. On the motorway I am driving slower than I do in the truck. Nothing to prove and a wonderful engine note. The car is so analogue. It lets you know exactly what is going on with it and the road. It rewards a well performed bend (and no doubt punishes you if done very badly) but is forgiving if you're just average most of the time.
I prefer the front end of the 997 but prefer the rear of my 996. Dilemma !

I can share your first Porsche experience, having only this year got mine.
I too have found the rear engine layout a really interesting and enjoyable learning experience. The way you come into and out of corners is really different (impressive in fact) as is the way that IMHO steering is less unsettled by crests as the main weight and pendulum effect is at the back axle.
My previous sports car experiences were as a very long-standing TVR owner and enthusiast and there was always a friendly but definite "them and us" rivalry between these camps, so that too made the experience all the more surreal for me.

By total coincidence, I saw a very near identical car on my commute early this morning and it did look very 'right'.As for keeping cars... I get in trouble for buying them, then for spending money fettling/fixing them, and also for even talking about selling them. The best route is to discuss as little as possible and JFDI.
