Since this thread....
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
....didn't have a poll, I thought I'd post one up.

READ THIS BEFORE VOTING: I've separated the options into manual and PDK-S, but also into those who did buy one (or could have had there been enough available and/or their gearbox of choice was present), and those who were never going to buy one new or chose not to as their preferred gearbox was not present. This is basically to see if there's any difference between Porsche's actual new car customers and the rest in terms of gearbox that type of custmer prefers.

I've copped out and voted "Couldn't/didn't buy 991 GT3: can't decide!" because I love the manual in my 7.1 current GT3 when not on the road, but also really enjoy the PDK in my BGTS when on track.

I think the PDK-S is a phenomal transmission. Don't get me wrong, I'm generally a big fan of good manual transmissions, and loved the gearbox in other/previous cars (eg. BMW 1M, 993 RS short shift with golden rod, etc). However, I think PDK-S is a masterpiece.

If you think it's a crap poll, don't participate then, it's just a bit of fun smile The number of statistically useful polls on PH that actually reveal something can probably be counted on one hand hehe

I love manuals but fail to see the point now . The cars have torque vectoring , rws, electronic everything and the so called manuals even heel and toe for you so what's the point ?

I think it's a very interesting poll and so are the results thus far.
I also think that if you've bought a 991 already, even if you previously wanted a manual, you'd likely either be swayed by the PDK or not want to tarnish your experience of owning it by saying/wishing you'd prefer a manual because you'd naturally defend a car you've bought.

I'm positive that if the 991GT3 were offered in manual only guise it still would have sold out, like all its predecessors did.
It would have been praised more highly by journos as the last and greatest purist car, and would have sold for overs.
But, it would have been slower and therefore less competitive, and that's what it's about these days - silly meaningless figures.

The GT3 is not just a marketing tool. It existed to serve a purpose - to homologate their race cars, which thy make a pile of cash out of.

I disagree with your premise that most owners were ok with or wanted PDK though I can't prove it (and certainly many current owners have grown to like it for whatever reasons) and I also disagree with your premise that most GT3 buyers aren't on PH, when historical lists of previous iterations show just how many GT3s have been owned by PHers.

An interesting poll question could be added:-

'If the 991 GT3 was only available in manual which of those buyers that bought it wouldn't have bought it as a manual?'
And whomever those people are, their places will have been taken by manual buyers and still sold out many times over.

Nothing that Cmoose just said can seriously be doubted, in my view.
