Does anybody know what the below is, its on the drivers side and just behind the engine, it looks rather rusty, on an otherwise very spotless car. Wondering if it is anything that needs worrying about, only thibgs that are the least bit rusty in the car is this and the exhaust bolts....what the hell did porsche make those out of.....

I think It is a German second world war limpit Mine ,apparently this is why the 996 and 997 engines explode for no apparent reason ,Hope this helps....And I think your exhaust studs look knackered, they look like the bio degradable ones that give you that nice sporty sound when your back boxes fall off,

Rusty part is the cover plate on the brake booster pump , Opc will sell you same material new one for £5-600 fitted . Read a specialist somewhere down south has manufactured one in stainless steel for less than half that. I know where I would go.....

If its just a cover isnt it easy to change £5_600 sounds a bit steep....?

Thanks indeed by the way

It's only your cover plate that is corroding , Opc will only change cover plate and pump as one unit thus quite a high price. A call to the service desk will confirm costs as its not an uncommon job as these cars deteriorate with age. Regards. Ian

It is a Oil scavenge pump, about £300 plus labour to fix. This, the exhaust bolts and various other fixings are made of a proprietary material called monkey metal;)

Its not actually leaking atm though , the torx bolts can sometimes be an issue to get undone which may add to the labour price.

I would recomend getting your exhaust studs done at the same time , it makes the pump job a bit easier and there dont seem to be a lot left of them from the picture.

Recently replaced all 6 exhaust studs on my Gen2 C2s 59 reg 32000 miles as all crumbling away they do run a bit warm though!! replaced with proper Sheffield steel ones which will last a bit longer than standard I think
