Well as much as I love my 996 GT3 2 I am going to let it go, it is just not getting used which is criminal, I spent 4.5k having everything required done earlier in the year and as we all know the best thing for them is to be used, question is what to replace it with? I had thought about an F car but that will be no different to the GT3 sitting in the garage, so after ideas of a cheapish fun car I can use whenever without worrying about keeping it garaged, where I park it, putting miles on it etc, any ideas welcomed.

Shame but, FWIW and to answer your question I think you could do a lot worse than something with a Lotus badge.

What about a Ginetta? Drove one at Rockingham at of their open days and it was a lot of fun. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

Ginettas are great, but a bit compromised - at their best if you want to go racing - http://www.ginetta.com/championship_champ?champ=gr...

I'd be going for a really good hot hatch - Golf, RenaultSport, or maybe a 1 Series BMW?

Even an engine rebuild can't cost as much as normal running-costs on a Lotus or a Fezzah? hehe

TBF Lotus, I'm told, are pretty good.

A friend is a long term Elise addict; ran a Mk1 as pretty much a daily driver and has had a Mk2 for last few years. They've been nothing but reliable. He's now looking at upgrading (a lot) to an MP12 4C.

I don't think the OP is actually saying that exactly - I can sympathise with his conundrum.

I would, however, agree that good as it may be, a Golf R (or any other hot hatch), is not a high days and holidays, fun car. For me, the Elise would be a very strong contender and, FWIW, I also have a massive hankering for a 3-wheeled Morgan.

I went retro after my 996.2 GT3. A 2.2s - lovely car, light and deft - and a G50 3.2 which felt heavy and blunt after the earlier 911. But soon bored of those too. Truth is I enjoy the hunt for a new car, and fettling it to perfect spec / condition more than I do driving it (once the initial thrill has passed).
Oddly the one exception to that has been my R107 SL which I use to waft around in when commuting.

Pictures, spec, mileage etc?

Sure that you will have plenty of offers for it...

PS I should add that selling my 996.2 GT3 was a mistake. I thought I was bored with it, but nothing that followed was any better, and, in some areas, considerably worse. I hope you don't come to regret selling yours - even if you don't drive it much it should prove a good place to have your money, and reliable (more than be said for older 911s).

Re the golf R I agree it's not a high days and holidays car - it is a car that you can drive every day to the shops, park it anywhere without worrying and still have great fun in it. Well at least I do and each to his own. 😀 A 'shopping car' that can go that quickly is a bit special I think. Agree the OP probably wants something for special days though so the R is out.

I equally enjoy driving my 997 GTS leaving the golf for all those trips to the shops it was designed for 😀

This is not a bad idea, look up the thread on the bloke with the GT3 RS who is modding his 996 Carrera. 996 C2 Coupe is worth a fraction of your GT3 & will provide a high % of the enjoyment, even more so if you were happy to make a few subtle mods. Virtually depriciation proof, the lower value would encourage more use & if you bought one with a proper Hartech rebuild (they do thousands apparently so should be an easy find wink ) it takes away the slight IMS/bore score worries.

Mrs Digga is a not-so-casual observer of this phenomenon with my own cars. Having been without a fun/sports car for some years, here chief objection to my buying another this year was "you'll only end up selling it! There'll be a reason why, an excuse, something you find not to like about it, or another car...."

Yep, a 996 Carrera and take it to RPM Technik for a few mods to make it more focussed. A chap on here is doing that with a 996 that RPM Technik was selling.

A Lotus Europa would be another Elise-based option if an Exige is too showy and an Elise too bare.

This has happened to me over the years. Every time I decide I'm not using the GT2 enough and think of selling I make a point of booking a free Saturday night and taking off somewhere for a drive. When I'm home and it's back in the garage all those silly ideas of selling it have gone.
