991 GTS Must haves
Discussion
1st morning with Targa. 6am run in memory of the old fella who I lost 7 years ago today. The guy who made me the petrolhead I am. It was the perfect car for the job . Roof off , great noise , wind in your hair . Yes dynamically it gives a little to the GT3,s and 4 but for an early morning B road blast it's a great tool. Being a bit softer than the GT stuff helps a little. Doing the NC500 in Sept and this should do nicely.
One of the main benefits for me is I'm not a cab man at all , feel exposed ,and not particularly keen on the image of them , but the Targa gives you 80% of the involvement in your surroundings like a cab but without feeling like your on display .

I am seriously contemplating a Targa, sold my 991S end of last year and I'm itching again. I've heard some reports about wind noise/buffeting and the extra weight/softer settings diluting the driving experience so would appreciate your thoughts. I am past the stage in life where I won't compromise on performance, this would be my 8th 911 and I can live with something a little softer. Out of interest did you have to twist arms to spec those wheels?
There was a good article in Total 911 a few months ago comparing Coupe, Cab and Targa 991 GTS's....worth spending a couple of quid on downloading it if you're contemplating.Blue62 said:

I've done over 7000 miles now and a fair few of those with the roof open......the Targa has it's detractors complaining about wind buffeting but I've found it no worse than driving with the window open but what you do get though is to hear that howling exhaust note and all it's crackling and popping on the down changes in full surround sound....it makes me smile endlessly a sound I'll never get bored of (but if I do I can just turn it off).....mine has the manual box....again it had it's detractors....quite honestly I've no idea what they're talking about as I find it's rifle bolt action and lightness of touch very satisfying indeed and having seven gears means you get more changes to feel that slick rifle bolt action of course you don't have to change into 7th gear it's just as happy in 6th....this car devours the B roads like a greedy kid in a sweet shop sure it's a lot heavy and not as light or as quick as the RS but I find it deals with our not so hot roads significantly better.....on track though it's just OK as you can feel that weight for sure....all in all though for weekend blasts and Euro trips it's brilliant I can't stop driving the bloody thing so much so that my RS has been relegated to the upper level of my garage and hasn't seen the light of day for 7 months (that reminds me I must take it for spin)....I honestly can't find a fault with the Targa, it does what it does brilliantly and deals with whatever my feeble driving skills can throw at it with consummate ease......my final word.........buy one (but get the manual gearbox though)
Thanks for that, it sounds as though it could be the car I'm yearning for and I would go manual, my last car was PDK and though it's a brilliant box it was just too quick and made the drive a little too detached for me. I wasn't going to opt for black again but yours looks just right and the wheels really set it off.Blue62 said:

You'll be lucky .... Only 6 manual GTS Targas registered ! 90 ish PDK's . There rare things . Out again in mine this morning again for a further pointless 100m drive . It's a long time since a car has made me jump out of bed to hit the roads before the masses wake up .

Masses or Missus? I'm going to buy new so will be speccing one up from scratch and for various reasons there's no rush. The only pity is that it won't be the N/A engine.Out again in mine this morning again for a further pointless 100m drive . Pleased to hear it doesn't wear off !
well it hasn't for me I find with my RS I have to have an excuse to put miles on it and they've got to be quality driving miles but with the GTS I just get in and drive it.....anywhere.....anytime....LOL.....I really do genuinely love driving it.....it's not as numb and dulled down an experience as some would have you believe as you are finding out .....not as sharp as a GT3 / RS / R but in my opinion on British roads as an all rounder it ticks all my boxes as they say it is what it isGassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
