996.2 GT3 trackday crash rockingham
Discussion
I was following him on the sighting laps, came into the pits briefly before going back out. he must have been only only short way ahead of me as when i came round the corner he was sitting in the middle of the track, then the marshalls threw out the red flags. I had a brief look when it was in the pits, damage on three corners plus rear view looked like the shell had a twist in it. Poor guy only managed two laps. I heard he was insured but with a 15K excess, don't know how true that is.
Nasty place to crash. Once you commit to the turn there's no way back. A slight feather at best. A lift and you are in the wall. You must be line perfect on entry if you are committed.
It's like woodcote, if you go in, it's going to be a big accident.
Poor chap. Hope that there were no injuries
In car in the 997 cup. Imagine things going wrong on the banking.

I find it odd people crash in the 1st few laps, I tend to be a good >10 seconds off the pace for the 1st 2 stints of 8 laps while I play with tyre pressures and see the lay of the land/track/grip etc.
Going out gun ho after 2 laps seems crazy !
Any way hope the driver is ok., never nice seeing crashed cars :-(

I used to sprint and did an event on the full Goodwood circuit a couple of times. One year, because it was deemed particularly wet and tricky, we had to do a handful "ducks and drakes" session before timed practice. A bloke - and MSA licence holder (not that that counts for much, as they let me have one too) - in a not hugely powerful car (an MGB) oversteered on the exit of Lavant and tobogganed across the grass into the infield tyre wall. st happens.

I've seen people go off on the 'sighting laps' - and plenty of race drivers have managed to crash on the 'green flag' warm up.

Also, it's funny how tricky the combination of a cold car and greasy/green track can be.
not really that's why people do site laps at track days even though one may know the track very well, to get a feel for how it is on the day !any one going off on a site lap should be sent home imo or in the 1st 20 minutes of any track day.
My last track day had 7 red flags within the 1st 3 hours, people do seem clueless and hair brained once let loose on a track.
FFS your 1st 4 laps should be your own site laps and then come in and sort tyre pressures !
but again seems this is the way the last few years and why I sort of stopped doing them 4 or 5 years a go bar the odd one.
